Re: Weighting a kayak...

Hi Beryl, If you choose to weight the kayak, I would use water bags so that the boat will not sink if it fills with water (even if you have bulkheads, air bags or fixed buoyancy). If you can I think you would be better off getting used to the handling on flat water, then moving up to more challengin...

Re: Do cockpit covers reduce fuel consumption?

Hi, I have a Vito campervan with a Karitek easyloader. I find a small difference in fuel consumption between 2 sea kayakaks & an empty loader (1-2 mpg), but no perceptable difference with or without cockpit covers, I use the covers to keep water out of the cockpits. I find similar results for my car...

Have you considered a folding boat like a Klepper or a Feathercraft? I am not an expert on these, but there are people on this site that paddle them.

Hi,
Please do not set off parachute flares inland, they reach the ground still burning & have caused fires.

Re: How much buoyancy do you need?

Hi, I have seen this problem happen with someone wearing a BA & an inflated drysuit. The problem appeared to be the area around the buttocks inflating, they are an experienced paddler but could not get their head above water. We prioritised rescuing them over analysing exactly what was preventing th...

Re: How much buoyancy do you need?

Hi, If you are considering inflating a drysuit, one problem is that because the BA holds the top close to your body you end up inflating the legs. I have seen people float upside down in a drysuit unable to get their head to the surface because they forgot to purge the dry suit of air. This happened...

Re: How much buoyancy do you need?

The main problem if you reduce the buoyancy of your PFD is in very rough water where you will spend extra energy to keep your mouth high enough up to breath.

Re: River white water training for sea kayaking?

Hi, On flat water most boats turn more efficiently on an outside edge, partly because the boat does it natrually, but also partly because you tend to paddle further from the low edge than the high edge. In dynamic water stability becomes more important so you show the relative flow the hull of your ...

I have seen this happen to a Silva hand compass. I always like to have at least 3 compasses in a group & if I think we may need to navigate by compass do a comparison of compasses before launching. The compass that I had reverse polarity appeared to have happened when it was in the boot of the car a...

Hi Ceegee, I am not sure that getting in the water is a good idea, if there is a strike to the water surface the lateral currents in the water at the point of the strike could be 10000's A/m2, reducing as the inverse square of the distance, the current will flow through a body the same as water (our...

Re: GCSE research on kayaks

Hi, For storage I use the hatches which are almost waterproof, with dry bags as a secondary barrier. If you fit out your boat it can be quite comfortable, my longest time in a boat without getting out was about 12 hours on an open sea crossing. I use the deck elastics to hold splits & my towline, th...

Hi Ian, I have never owned the boat you have, but I have several friends who have, their boats did not have anything to cover the slot when the skeg was retracted, so I think that is a modification, looking at the cable used, I would suggest the person who did it had no background in engineering. I ...

Re: Skeg repair

Hi Ian,
You seem to have incorrect wire type (I have found 2.5mm 7 strand dieform stainless wire best) The wire pushes the skeg down & pulls it up. The setting is maintained by the friction in the Bowden cable.

Re: Carrying flares

Hi,
A list of equipment to be worn when firing a rocket flare was given earlier in this thread, what I would consider the most important item was missing which is glasses (even sun glasses if that it all you have), if the exhaust goes in your eyes it will do extremely serious damage.

Hi,
The usual recommendation for a rocket flare is to fire on your down wind side with the flare pointed slightly down wind so that the exhaust is not blown into your face as it would be if it is upwind of you.
