Re: Flying to New Zealand

Cheers for that advice. I've done a bit of blogging before so that could be worth a look. Not dates are set in stone so I'll have a look at December. Not really sure when's the best time to go. Thought it would be quite a big window being New Zealand. Don't mind if it's a direct flight or not, just ...

Re: I know a good few club coaches who openly voice their di

Back when I first started kayaking (90s). My club made it pretty hard to get star awards - not a bad thing they were just very ruthless with all the skills which I reckon made me a better paddler. Anyway I remember a coach once referring to "paying for the award". I guess if someone who isn't good e...

Re: Flying to New Zealand

Thank you Big Dee

I'll look at buying a Camper Van and see how it goes. I think I found one that was £600 to rent for a month, which I didn't think was too bad. But I suppose buying one means I can then sell it on after.

Flying to New Zealand

Hi All Looking to go WW kayaking in New Zealand in 2016. Maybe Oct - Nov time. I've searched around this topic but can't find much recent stuff so wondered if anyone could help me. Firstly just wondered if people agreed that's a good time to go. (after their winter). And also any ideas of a good air...

Re: Rivets

Hi Apologies for the delayed reply. Put this post up and forgot about it, not something I normally do but sometimes life just gets a bit busy. I've not taken the old ones off yet, I was mostly concerned about length as I know the plastic can be thick in this area, and as I don't often do this sort o...

Rivets

Just a quick technical question.

I need to replace end caps on some of our canoes and just wondered what size of pop rivet I should get. There for Old Town Discoveries and Allagashes if that helps.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: DofE Paddling Supervision

Hi John We have generally run canoe expeditions for silver groups. We have had a land based supervisor driving to check points, (usually a bridge over the river), and seeing them through. Then a qualified canoe coach following them, usually setting off about 15 to 20 minutes after them. The groups a...

Re: 2 star or not 2 star ?

To me star awards serve a number of purposes 1) Pre-requisite for another award you want 2) Good indicator of where you are with your paddling skills - what level you are at. 3) If you want some training - you kind of know what you're going to get with them, i.e. if you've got your 1 Star you know 2...

Re: Grading discussion: Swale

Heres my quick two pennies worth. I agree grading helps to choose rivers as it gives you an idea of the kind of thing you're going to be paddling. I don't think rivers should be down graded likely. Better to be on a river and think this is a bit easier than i thought, than have an epic walk out of a...

Re: WWS&R vs Rescue 3 SRT

I've not done the Adv WWSR but done WWSR and SRT I would say the WWSR is designed around paddle sport and as such filters out anything that isn't as useful so you're left with a course that only teaches the most practical and useful skills and concepts to help keep you safe on the river. From what I...
