Re: Sea Kayak paddle choice

You mean the block of text in yellow? Some sites work easily some don't so I suspect I missed adding a bit of HTML code in the right place. As for trolling, like to explain? Yes, there is a preview function available so it's quite easy on this site. ;) Your statements about the total lack of need f...

Re: Sea Kayak paddle choice

I note M-J-B's comment about "pulling straight back", but I rotate. Sorry, you lost me there. What comment? I also rotate. And mostly where paddle flutter is an issue it's not due to paddle size but rather due to paddle blade shape & design and also due to paddling technique. The tendency is that b...

... In addition to not being able to quote correctly Mac50L seems to be on a trolling expedition but I'll comment anyways: The tip on how to set up paddle feather is supposed to be a starting point instead of accepting some old beard stating 80 degree (or whatever) is best for all. Re: Sea Kayak paddle choice

Applying a bit of logic means feathered is unnecessary In my logical view feathered is not unnecessary. Wind is not the main reason for paddling with a feathered paddle. Neutral wrist alignment during a power stoke is the main reason to feather the paddle. If you have a split paddle you can test it...

Re: Cruising inertia

During your long distance paddle you probably can not paddle precisely in a straight line from A to B. More energy is needed to alter the course of a heavier boat. That's fine as long as wind & waves are trying (and failing) to get you off course but any reason you might have to alter the course mea...

Re: Can you still order a new Nordkapp LV?

I hope they at least keep the moulds and consider a re-run a few years from now. The Forti (or anything else Valley or the others have to offer) doesn't quite replace the LV so I'm out of options and have to take good care of the LV:s we have in the shed.

Re: Composite boats are they worth it?

Having compared poly to comparable composite models both in Valley and P&H ranges composite definitely has the advantage of being more easy driven on the water. Partially due to material flex, surface finish and weight but no poly kayak I have seen has been an identical replica of the composite coun...

Re: Spraydeck recommendations, please

My vote also goes to Reed Aquatherm. Artistic used to have one great neoprene deck, almost airtight and lasted for years, but unfortunately they changed the design and materials so that the successor was not as durable or even watertight. Aquatherm is not as durable as neoprene, but I believe it is ...

Re: Valley Nordkapp LV - seat out

The plastic seat deforms over time especially if it is not completely supported. In my opinion it should have foam in the front also. I have come across versions that are set up with foam as you describe and alternatively with the middle foam in two separate pieces but never without the front foam s...

Re: Valley Nordkapp LV - seat out

I have done it multiple times on a couple of Nordkapp LV:s. What worked for me is removing the foam under the front lip of the seat, rotating 90 degrees and lifting starting from the back corner of the seat pressing the plastic with your fingers so that it goes past the coaming. When putting everyth...

I can't advise on best price so this is slightly off topic but kind of relevant anyway. Especially when shopping online for cheap compasses, regardless of the merchant's willingness to deliver to your location make sure the compass is balanced for your region. Basically you should be able to do an unassisted re-entry without a paddle float, but if you are tired (perhaps injured) and/or the conditions are difficult why not utilise the paddle float and make sure your first attempt to re-enter is successful? If you were to fail your first attempt the odds to...

Re: Pros cons of a Nordkapp RM

When I go expeditioning the mandatory inclusion of a 5 litre wine box makes the weight of the hatch covers, and whether I choose to bring them along or not, a bit of a moot point! I bring a small plastic bottle filled with cask strength because total weight really matters, but I never leave the (he...

That's a common misbelief.

Nordkapp RM is a good allrounder. It's a bit of a barge compared to the other Nordkapps both on land and sea but it should be compared to other PE boats, not C/K boats.

Most of the waterproof phones are just that, waterproof but not corrosion proof. The Cetus series (or Scorpio & Aries/Delphin) are fine boats but being swede form (& hard chine for Aries/Delphin) they handle quite different comparing to the Nordkapps. Mostly it's a matter of taste, but I found none of the sizes I paddled (Original Cetus, Cetus MV & LV, Scorpio 170 & LV, Delphin ...

The sensitivity for shock from body immersion in cold water is quite easy to train, simply take regular swims (swimsuit only, diving not recommended) all year round and you end up enjoying it. (Over here during winter we have to cut a hole in the ice and use a pump circulating the water to prevent t...

From personal experience with the Nordkapps I would slightly disagree with the article. Edging and bow rudder is a more unstable technique and should primarily be practiced in calm water before moving to windy conditions. Leaning, stern rudder, bracing and even reverse sweep will work most of the ti...

I (70+kg) have never had problems turning upwind with the LV, but I did experience it with the Nordkapp Jubilee. Also, many inexperienced 70(ish)kg paddlers seem to struggle with unloaded Nordkapp PE in similar conditions. Skeg up, gain some speed, lean forward & towards the turn, apply low brace/st...

Those small Whale pumps are too low capacity in my opinion. I used to have a Henderson pump but i find the Bosworth Guzzler foot operated series quite a lot better. They are highly customisable and they also have a range for kayaks.

It would seem difficult to define "original" in this context so I guess setting dates would be next to impossible as old moulds no longer exist. The classic (in production after the Jubilee) was supposed to be "original" but I guess it was not. Also my second Nordkapp from late 1980s had slightly di...

Valley recently published a new kayak, the Nordkapp Forti. Does anyone have the specifications? Is it simply a new deck with redesigned cockpit and day hatch on the Nordkapp hull or is the hull also modified? Some pics on Valley FB page but no specs.
