Re: tees greta - access

Well, I am quite aware of the general attitude of Yorkshire farmers in the area, my father is one a couple of miles from Rutherford. Spoke to one of the local paddlers who was on the river yesterday. They have never had a problem before. As usual, they left no vehicles at the get in monopolising the...

Re: tees greta - access

Knowing the locals, any communication will only inflame them more. Reasonable discussion and a more formal approach shouldn't inflame things. Why should discussing a solution be inflammatory? Look at the farmer by the Swale who has honesty box parking. He saw an opportunity and used it to his advan...

Re: tees greta - access

I live in upper Swaledale, and often pass that way on a weekend... passed that way yesterday actually. You often see ridiculous numbers of paddlers cars parked at the get in at Rutherford. There were about 12 cars there at one point yesterday. Farmers use the narrow lanes with tractors, or vehicles ...

Re: Ladies paddling

Glad everyone had a great time... However, ultimately, this whole women and girls thing is all about money. The BCU get a pot of money for it, and a few coaches got together to make money putting on an event. If no one was paid for their services, and the profits donated to charity then I take it ba...

Re: Level 2 Mentoring, who can do this?

The reasoning behind the mentor being *ideally* a ukcc l2 or above coach is simply because that person will have half an idea about what you are doing and the nature of the training you have had. Someone who knows about coaching styles, IDEAS and WASP. Old L2 is not in the ball park of UKCC, a bit l...

Oh there were those slalomists that the BCU gave 20K each to so they could train for the olympics. Not the BCU but UK sport. Stop putting down the BCU. Sometimes I think that the readers of this site are Daily Mail readers and the BCU the Labour Party. Anyway I think it was a good thing that the at...

The Endless river ones look good, I have some of their canoe ones and they are good quality. I didn't realise they sell kayak stuff too.

Might know of some. Do you have your own insurance? Are you old BCU L3 Canoe or UKCCL2 with MWE & 4 Star?

OMG... he can't have ever seen William Nealy's Whitewater Tales of Terror... Mr December. If he had he would never have allowed that photo.

although Mr Nealy didn't include a lamp in his illustration to provide extra groinal focus.

In this country being sponsored or a team paddler just means that you get to buy your boats at a special rate. I know or a few people who have had the odd boat supplied or a trip paid for. Hardly time to give up your day job! Oh there were those slalomists that the BCU gave 20K each to so they could...

Re: Female Pro Kayakers V Unicorns

Depends what you mean by 'pro' really. If you mean 'paid to boat' then there are loads... plenty of females working in the outdoors paid to take folks boating in one way or another, whether that is their own coaching business like Lowri Davis or a centre assistant. B if you mean women who win stuff....

The boats were the original Pyranha Everests! Pyranha has since used the name for plastic boats sold with the expedition market in mind.

Re: Which Saw?

I carry a laplander saw for canoeing. Most canoeists carry one incase they (or someone else) ends up stuck in a preacher pin and they need to cut the thwart. These saws are great for cutting stuff up to about 4 inches in diameter. After that they struggle. I would question how effective they would b...

Re: FSRT Fail

The FSRT is an 'attendance' course rather than a pass/fail. In order to have 'attended' you need to fulfill the requirements of participation.

Is this just a word game? That is open to question. Fact remains that you have to participate to the required standard to get the ticket.

My first thought when reading this thread was: how long have I been reading 'The BCU has nothing to offer me as a recreational paddler' and 'the coaching/star award scheme is crap' on UKRGB, the biggest paddling forum in Britain? It must be a good ten years now. Coincidence? I don't see it as a pro...

Yes, more and more people just want skills coaching. You see providers offering this with a Star Test as an almost incidental outcome. I have people come on courses for the training. I might be running a 3 Star training/assessment and then at the end when I come to collect the BCU certificate money ...

I know quite a lot of people who will happily launch them selves down G5, and yet they are incapable of making eddys and ferries on G3. I think that the ability to paddle a rapid is more than simply surviving it, it is about owning it. Catching eddys and making different attainments demonstrates tha...

Who can assess the 3 star touring award? I can assess 3 star WW can I do the touring one? Possibly, and I strongly suspect that this will become more popular! I think you will need to firstly gain the 3 Star Touring yourself. Then apply to the BUC for a log book. They will check that you are update...

Hi,

Are there any canoe coaches who are running an AWE WW Canoe training in the next few months?

That is dreadful. No one cares what the flipin' logo is like when it takes them weeks to perform simple admin tasks like sending out Star Test certificates. You can't polish a turd as they say. So it will cost 60k plus to design the new logo and rebrand... that money would be better spent supporting...

I spend about 2k a year on boats and kit, because I like nice things.
