Re: Canoeing Near Orlando Florida

Well, I did survive so here's a micro trip report... there were five of us in total and we took a rental car to the Juniper Springs Recreation Area which took about one hour fifteen minutes from Seaworld Orlando. This rec' area has a mix of camping, picnic tables, warm showers, swim area and a decen...

Re: Canoeing Near Orlando Florida

Thanks for the tips. A couple of colleagues are interested in the Juniper Run in the Ocala National Forest. If I manage to do it and don't get eaten by a 'gator I'll let you know how it went.

Canoeing Near Orlando Florida

I will be on in Orlando with work in late January and thought it would be a good opportunity to go canoeing (not totally averse to kayaking but have a preference). I don't normally get a chance to paddle so will be happy with just about anything! Does anyone have any recommendations for places that ...

Quest LV for sale - London

I'm selling my 2006 Quest LV. I bought it from its original owner in 2011 and haven't used it in about a year. Looking for £1200. I don't use it enough since our baby arrived and can't justify keeping it. I'm based in Mottingham London SE9, just off of the A20. It's always been stored in the garage ...

Book Recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations for books about any type of paddling. Not text books or manuals but rather books about adventures and journeys. So far I've found Chris Duff's Southern Exposure mentioned in the forums and of course the book about Freya's trip around Oz. Have you got any more to add?

Ed Gillet Youtube Find

I spotted this on Youtube today. It's a TV interview with Ed Gillet who kayaked from California to Hawai. Late 80's so no GoPro footage. Enjoy!

I learned the west cardinal with Tom Cunliffe's "‘Wasp-Waisted Woman’ (all the ‘W’s)"

I find this image helps me remember the colours:

Re: Mind that propelor

Horrible story but glad you survived - it could have been so much worse. If a Mayday was called, the MCGA are duty bound to investigate. Would MCGA automatically notify the Marine Accident Investigation Bureau? They've published reports on similar incidents with RIB collisions and also leisure craft...

Re: Force Ten Spindrift 300

I noticed that the Spindrift has snow valances - useful if you expect snow to be blown up between the inner and flysheet, but otherwise will just impair ventilation. Something like the Vortex 300 looks very similar but with better ventilation and only slightly thinner poles, which will probably stil...

Re: Entel VHF radios

I bought one recently but only used it once so far. It survived a swim though and it looks very well built. There are just some contacts for recharging that should be rinsed if you get sea water on them. I bought it largely on the basis of reviews/comments on ybw.com/forums. Based on that they seem ...

Re: International Sea Kayak Meet - Brittany.

This does look like fun and a good excuse to go to France. I'm still a paddling newbie and need to sort out permission, funds etc. but when were you thinking of travelling?

I don't have a boat of my own (although might get one by then) so do you know if it's possible to rent one there?

Re: What to wear?^

Well, it turns out the dry suit was the way to go! Ended up with thermals plus fleece salopettes being enough insulation. Aside from that I just needed a hat and neck warmer. I also got a pair of neoprene pogies for £10 that didn't come out until the last day when it was really windy. I only fell in...

Re: What to wear?^

It is worth splashing out on a tube of their silicone zip lube. and getting the zips to open/close freely before use in anger. Lomo included a tube of lube. I actually called them after struggling to open them the first time. I didn't want to break anything but the chap reassured me that as long as...

Thanks for all the replies - I just received my Lomo Renegade drysuit. First impressions are that it looks well made and surprisingly comfortable. I can see why people use one piece fleeces - I tried my sailing fleece sals & jacket and the overlap is a bit bulky. I'll take a selection along and figu...

Re: What to wear?

If you have neither, a full drysuit is cheaper than separates. And yes there will be some seepage around the waist joint of separates even though it overlaps, how much depends on how tight it is (too tight makes it difficult to breathe and relax in the boat) and how long you are immersed for. Are y...

Hi! I'm a beginner who's booked a 4 day sea kayak course on the south coast in late November. Now it dawns on me that it might be just a little bit cold. I'll be able to get back to a warm bed every night but the thought of wearing a wetsuit all day for four days doesn't really appeal (although I th...
