Do look at loom thickness in relation to the child's hand size as well.

Indeed practice rescues so they become as instinctive as possible. As others have said to the white water safety and rescue course, and if you have done it before maybe do it again.

Re: Pinned paddler and Rescue - Lots to discuss...

I note that the article does say the casualty could not hear any instruction being shouted to him. This is pretty often the case and does make rescue difficult.

Why do people ALWAYS seem to think that their kayaking videos need a music background. At least with a drone maybe people will just leave the original sounds it.

Re: How long should I wait before getting rid of my Kayaking gear.

I may return more to my childhood occupation of reading. As a child asthma prevented most sports.... I could perhaps read about paddling!

I can still cycle which has its practical side as I can no longer walk more than 200 yards even on the best days.

How long should I wait before getting rid of my Kayaking gear.

Following back surgery it is no longer safe for me to attempt and serious paddling in a kayak. I can still canoe on placid water but any situation in which more than floating will be required to self rescue looks a bit irresponsible. I am still undergoing further assessment and treatment but due to ...

I have known a few people in this position in the past. Most of them have just had to rejoin and do an update and of course have current First Aid qualifications. Your first step should be to phone British Canoeing and speak to someone in the coaching department. Do not be shy to mention paddling yo...

If you can get to a shop where you can try some for size and easy of getting in and out that is a good first step. Some of the cheaper ones do seem to be pretty good.

Re: First thing you coach on WW

First thing would be to assess the ability of the people you are about to coach. You'll unlikely know what you need to do until you've gauged that aspect. More or less what I was going to say, I had thought of adding it depends on who you are coaching.... WW Beginners come in a variety of shapes, s...

Re: Buoyancy aid advice

Echoing what a previous poster has said do if you can try the type you want to buy while swimming and since you intend to paddle white water try it on white water. Depending on your shape some buoyancy aids will ride up your torso and get in the way a bit if you do take a swim.

Re: Anybody paddle in the dark?

We often paddle on local canals and even the Thames in the dark. Key is DO NOT use torches you don't need them. Do take torches though and if there is any chance of other craft in motion do show navigation lights but try and keep them out of your eyelines. It is very easy to see which bits are water...

If you do not need prescription lenses to paddle just try a cheap pair by all means use a strap so you do not loose them. You can even get polarising lenses quite cheap.

Yes I am afraid that you are. land is not free and flat bits with planning permission for parking close to Symonds Yat are pretty scarce. We have free use of all rivers so paying to use car parks provided is a really good way to earn our welcome. Also to be hones the fees at Wyedean are pretty reaso...

Of course there is also the Darley Abbey site on the outskirts of Derby that is quite a nice park and play spot.

Or you could make contact with Icthus Canoe Club https://ichthuscanoeclub.co.uk/ who paddle the area year round and will know which rivers in the peaks are good in summer.

If you go to a shop and try some on DO NOT then go online and buy the same thing that is not fair, but if you find what you want cheaper online do tell the retailer! On the other hand if you are doing really silly things like jumping of waterfalls an expensive helmet that needs replacing after impac...

Paddling exclusively deep water in park and play spots. Buy a really expensive showy paddle. Rock bashing in the Peak District or Wales a cheaper pair will suffice you are going to damage them whatever you use eventually. Borrow all your mates paddles especially when you are cold and wet and see how...

Then there is the whole issue of getting the boat from your boathouse to the roof rack a...

Looking at the level guage at brecon the usk is still very low after yesterday's rain and dropping again. I am assuming it is too low to navigatge at the moment and likely to be so at the weekend. Does anyone know better?

Re: 2 star - why canoe and kayak

If you own a canoe and paddle it quite often you will have no trouble passing the two star yourself. As far as candidates you want to coach are concerned it will help them at the early stage of their paddling career to try both types of paddle. It will also help them to decide where they want to go ...
