Re: whats so great about kevlar carbon kayaks

I've owned a carbon/kevlar QuestLV for 8 years.....Never had any issues on day paddles with minimal ballast, but, the one thing I've found to be a problem is that when out for a solo jaunt, if the wind is picking up it gets a bit scary putting it back on the roof bars (I made some closed cell suppor...

Re: Knowing when to turn back!

Thanks for the replies and updates- very helpful, the hotel at Keppoch was alright! (new job and the joys of homeownership have fairly curtailed my paddling in the last few years, sorting this out as of now!) Thinking on launching from Arisaig itself- working til 8 Friday so will be there by 10 and ...

Re: Knowing when to turn back!

Ha ha Mike- I wonder if it's a case of a lone person clogging up a table and then 4 folk turn up looking to eat......Thinking on a wee jaunt to Arisaig this weekend, weather looks unpredictable but will take the fishing rods in case- would be interested to hear which establishments are being iffy......

Re: Knowing when to turn back!

I had to laugh to myself when I turned back to Bottle Island- muttering to myself "Bottled It" Island! ! Am Fuaran is, in my opinion a thumbs down.....last time I went there was late March 2013, went in to a deserted pub and asked about food...."fully booked"....only option was an overpriced mediocr...

Re: P&H "Wire" skeg users?

Don't know if this is what you're looking for info wise- but my Quest LV has the same skeg wire it came with in 2007.....never jammed or let me down but helps to immerse the whole boat in the local (freshwater)loch after a sea jaunt (good rolling practice but a lot colder than the sea!).....

Knowing when to turn back!

Got myself up to the Summer Isles at the weekend, too good a forecast for solo paddling to be missed. I didn't really have a plan but when I set out at 9am Saturday from Polbain I decided to go round Tanera Mor and head for Priest Island- via the smaller islands, hopping until Bottle island then hea...

Re: Where to buy a canoe these days in Scotland?

Forgot about that one Twopigs- will have a look. I've emailed neviscanoes- if they're still going it'd be good as still got til the 5th off so could pick one up en route to somewhere on the west. I'd seen that GoKayaking Scotland and seems Cam and Fozz from Brookbank work there now, but the site isn...

Where to buy a canoe these days in Scotland?

Can anyone advise who is still in business these days? I'm looking to get an open canoe for using mainly on Loch Insh and the Spey so I can take the OH and dog, possibly some overnight camps etc but hadn't realised that Brookbank had gone to the wall in Perth and Highland Canoes near us ceased tradi...

Cheers Mike, had a PM from a very helpful chap with a fair bit of detail....will try that avenue and if it fails will PM you with a request for some help!
Their weekend schedule for this year looks pretty good too, better get the ball rolling and get joined up!

I wasn't sure whether to stick this in the paddling partners section, but as I'm trying to establish contact with a club I thought here would be more appropriate....?

Any paddlers from Inverness Canoe Club?

Just wondering if any regulars on here paddle with this club? I've finally found a decent job just 5 miles from home so my links with Tayside Sea Kayak Club are sadly coming to an end. I've been on the ICC site and sent a detailed email to them via their "Contact" page but heard nothing back from an...

Re: Where to live in the UK for boating, biking, and adventu

I'd second Aviemore/Kingussie area or Fort Bill....superb MTB'ing and running-mountains and forests aplenty, where I am is 1hr from Fort Bill and the whole NW is less than 2 hrs away, loads of WW if that's your thing but also great for sea kayaking. Skiing is unreliable of course(after 2 mental wint...

Re: How many people carry EPIRB or PLB while Seakayaking ?^

For anyone who does activities alone I think they're pretty essential. Those who ALWAYS paddle with others are often fooling themselves they're safer in a group, but when conditions deteriorate badly you can be sure you're almost always on your own anyway, the rest will be struggling to keep the rig...

Re: How many people carry EPIRB or PLB while Seakayaking ?^

It's a fine line I suppose judging whether one is needed, but the technology is there and relatively cheap. Makes me wonder if there was any immediate embracing of mobile phones by sea kayakers when they emerged to the masses(probably not, coverage is still cr*p in the places we'd want to go even no...

Re: How many people carry EPIRB or PLB while Seakayaking ?^

I know this is an older post, just wondering if more people have started carrying a PLB since the last post was made? I'm seriously about to buy one (safety-marine doing the FastFind for £201 (with GPS) delivered) as I still kayak largely alone, and this seems perfectly reasonable. One other factor ...

Re: Good old sense of adventure or stupid?

Shelved the idea, too short notice really anyway, and the level had risen a few feet by last night. It's the strainers etc that give most concern really. The brother in law did from his mums in Aberlour to Spey Bay a few years ago in a 17ft Scirrocco sea kayak(...!) alone, thought that was crazy eno...

Good old sense of adventure or stupid?

Not having got out on my sea kayak much this year(perfect storm of her shift work, a new puppy and gash weather !) I'm considering doing a 3 day solo trip from my house in Kincraig to Spey Bay, possibly tomorrow as this is the only 3 days I'll have off and so will my OH. She will be at her mums in A...

Re: Dead sheep in the river

I know the head gamekeeper of one of the estates, he wasn't bothered at all, seems the farms on the estates are leased, and there's only one way the farmer will know that's when he brings the sheep in and notices the numbers don't add up! Also there's no guarantee where the sheep is is where it came...

Dead sheep in the river

Hi, While out for a recreational paddle on Loch Insh and up the Spey to the confluence of the Tromie, I came across two dead sheep in a kilometre starting to look rather rank caught in the overhanging growth. Is there a "standard" thing to do in this situation? Contact the SCA person responsible for...

Re: Why don’t more people surf?

East coast is garbage in general unless you can already surf, for learning it's the pits. The usual suspect websites are always wrong- if I take my Speedo over it's flat calm, the days I don't "surf's up". But that's usually messy wind waves, with a pitiful 5 second period that don't gently spill th...

Re: Failed sea kayak roll.

I agree with the others who say forget the C-C, our club teaches pawlata, and for those who want to progress from that it's the screw/sweep roll. I don't personally know any paddlers who use a C-C. Too much faff, need to be mega flexible, it's a very quickly executed stroke so in a heavy sea boat pr...

Re: Failed sea kayak roll.

I found that by practising sculling for support with the kayak right over on it's side helped, because at that point you can slow the sculling right down then bring the blade round to the bow and let the boat go over with the paddle kept at the side, wait a second or two then reverse the action and ...

Re: Kyle Rhea tidal energy farm

Could get interesting if the ferry engine fails on the flood tide, and like Jim concerns over the RN considering they ran aground outside Kyle of Lochalsh not so long ago? It is a shame that the community there will probably get a raw deal as per usual, hope it's not going to be the same scenario as...

Her attitude and reputation for hostility may well be a reason why the owners of the croft (NTS) are reluctant to sell it to her?! From reading the link contents it seems like her problem stems primarily from the "land based invaders" who come over by ferry and want to explore the island(shock horro...

Re: Uploaded photos on PC out of order?

That is excellent Delphinidae- I'd got them from the camera with the "advanced users" bit which just treats the camera as a storage device and put them in order as they should be but unfortunately leaves them with names like "P9110148" etc. I copied the file to test it and if I name the first "Lismo...

It seems to have no idea of sorting things chronologically and I don't know how to get it to sort it...
