Re: Advice for learning to surf a sea kayak

I wonder about 'experienced guys' letting you attempt to surf in water like that. It does sound like a recipe for serious injury (to you and anyone near you) and I wouldn't fancy attempting a rescue if it went wrong. Putting a 17' heavy boat plus paddler in waves that are 50% taller than an average ...

Re: Advice for learning to surf a sea kayak

My thought would be that in conditions like that you would have very little hope of being in control enough to surf a sea kayak. With waves that large and particularly that close together and with a strong onshore breeze the boat (due to its length) will almost invariably dig in at the bow and then ...

Any deck that will fit the Alaw Bach will fit the Isel.

Re: Beginner first boat in Maine: Explorer vs Rockpool Taran 16 vs Eto

I'm not sure of the carrying capacity of the Eto compared with the Alaw Bach but I have down quite a number of 7 day camping trips in an Alaw Bach. It has proved faultless. I cannot recommend it highly enough and would expect a similar quality from the Eto.

Sorry Mac50L, my post was meant to be very tongue in cheek...
In fact I was much the same as you, growing up on the coast in a family that gave me the freedom to explore and test the boundaries....I count myself very lucky to had such a childhood !!

You could probably use a Dremel or similar with a burred end fitted. That would remove the material fairly quickly but in a controlled manner.

Re: Dry cags for women?

You could try the Reed Chillcheater ones. They have an option for putting in your own measurements and don't use latex. I have had a couple of tops by them that are the ones I always use and I have had them over 4 years without problems. They are very light and don't feel restrictive. You can also w...

Re: Recommend me a PLB

The latest McMurdo 220 uses GPS and Galileo and is very compact. Got rid of my bulky Max G Fastfind and replaced with one of these. Fits in my BA pocket easily. I'm not sure that the ACR offers anything different however i am reassured by the fact that McMurdo have been around for quite some years a...

Re: Advice on second hand Kayak please

You may well be better of looking at a kayak that is for an adult and child rather than a 'tandem'. they will tend to be lighter and less bulky and would be perfect for a 6 year old. I had a quick seach and the following came up but worth you doing a bit more checking around to see what else is avai...

Let us know how you get on with the Mitchell blades, especially compared to the VE ones. I almost went for the Bomboras before i decided on my VE paddles so would be interested to hear a comparison.

Re: Broke deckline fixation on an Isel

I have had an Alaw bach for 10 years and an Isel for 2 and never had any problems with the deck fittings so you may just have a boat that had a glitch when they were first glued in. Worth re-gluing and see how you get on.

Have they actually discontinued the Alaw Bach or just added the ETO to their list of boats. Seems strange to discontinue such a popular boat when the larger Bach hardly seems to sell in any numbers.

VE Paddle swap

I have a VE Explorer Aircore full carbon blade and shaft. It is on a straight shaft. 2 piece with usual adjuster. Length is 205-215. Excellent condition. Re: Should I get a Valley Sirona RM or a Zegul Arrow Play? (Nuka?)

Not sure how much the Zugul Arrow Play composite is but if close to the price of the Sirona RM then i would opt for the Zegul. Much lighter with good rocker and hard chined hull. Not paddled one myself but had a Greenland for a couple of years and it was a delight to paddle (but much more 'compact' ...

Re: Play the sea

I had a Delphin 150 for a while but found it a bit 'heavy' when paddling....didn't feel nimble...which was a disappointment as I expected it to be great. I do have a Rockpool Isel but whilst small it is still quite a long boat (but great to paddle). I would suspect that if you wanted a 'play' boat (...

Re: Tiderace Tour 17-S experiences

I like the Explorers with the glass shaft (gives slightly more flex when paddling). My paddling is mostly high angle so a different one may suit you better but it is possibly down to the blade size. If you ring the chap that makes them he is very helpful. I used various paddles but mainly used Werne...
