Re: Race Pace Boats

A few Southampton paddlers have bought K1s, K2s, Single and Double Skis direct from Knysna Racing. The build quality is good and we're very happy with the boats. None of them are for beginners but they have good racing and intermediate designs. Between us we've probably covered all build constructio...

Re: I've just ordered my first "Masters" marathon K1

I bought a Knysna Jacana earlier this year. I had an Eta which I loved but at 90/95 kg I struggled in waves and portaging. The Jacana has a bit more secondary stability which means I can paddle harder through chop etc. It's also got a bigger cockpit which means I can actually get in and out without ...

Re: DW in a k4

I asked the organisers about this a few years ago. They have decided that only K1 and K2 boats are permitted. There are several locks on the canal where you could not portage a K4's length without lots of manoeuvring and it would be also be unsafe on many of the Thames portages. Shame, it would be f...

Re: Waterside Series

Hi Mark. Good advice from all above. I've always used the Watersides to work out what our true cruise speed is. Secret to DW is to keep the heart rate as consistently low as possible and avoid blips. Trying to race portages can have the adverse effect of sucking energy and affecting paddling speed a...

x-country spikes with the spikes removed. Look for middle/long distance shoes as the sprint versions often have hard plastic soles. This place often has good deals.

Re: Difference Kirton Meister / Marsport Condor?

It's a while since I've paddled either but when taking beginners out I've never noticed a difference. They're good beginner boats and suitable for novice DW crews. Intermediate paddlers won't notice any significant speed gains. If you have a choice go for the stiffer hull. If you can I'd move into a...

Nick - Keep Calm and Paddle On! You know it makes sense. Hope you have a good one and to see you at Westmonster on Monday. I snapped my right cruciate again 3 weeks ago. It's meant a couple of last minute changes to our portaging technique but I can't wait for saturday. Have fun.

Re: DW 2012

Wheezy - don't put anything under the seats unless they are the 2 pin Kirton type and very solid. They take a lot of hammer when you shoulder the boat and a broken seat pin is not easy to fix mid-race. I've got 2 footrests in our boat. If you've got room put another metal bar (with round holes in it...

Re: DW 2012

I had a quick look at comparative Canal vs Thames times for the top 50 crews last year. Unless you're an elite paddler you will probably not be faster on the Thames. Out of the top 50 crews at Teddington last year only 17 were faster on the Thames than the canal and 9 of these finished in the final ...

Re: DW 2012

Unless you're a trained runner I think it's mad to jump out of a boat and deliberately raise your heart rate. The longer term impact on your paddling has to be detrimental. I've spoken to a few fast crews over the last couple of years and they all say that they would have had a faster DW time if the...

Re: DW 2012

Dan Seaford posted this yesterday "There are couple of patches of ice near the start, that could still be there come race day. But shouldn't cause a problem, possible extra bit of running.". It's been over 10 degrees the last couple of days so I'd be very surprised if there was any ice left by Sunday.

Re: DW 2012

There were 4 K2s and a K1 for a 12 mile time trial on the Hamble at 8am yesterday. We had a more leisurely 15 miler mid morning and a couple of other Southampton crews braved the trek for Dreadnought to Marlow. In spite of the arctic weather we've managed lots of water time. Just hoping that all thi...

Stour Descent

This is a great race and an opportunity to experience conditions which we'd never normally paddle. We filmed our race with a helmet-cam and posted a short video http://bit.ly/vS3Hjc. Come and have a go next year. It's great fun.

Re: DW 2012

Oops. Meant the Bruce Tunnel in the Savernake Forest. I didn't realise that it's 200 years old (built in 1810). Apparently the local landowner wouldn't let them cut through his land so they had to build the 459m tunnel. Blake's lock is the last portage before hitting the Thames.

Went for a quick paddle on the K&A this afternoon. As mentioned Crofton is totally empty due to engineering works. Looks very different without any water. The good news is that Blake's Tunnel is still full! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-u1vNy1205-Y/Tr1fXR8ougI/AAAAAAAAFXA/zP3ZwYlAZx4/w239-h179-...

Come on Nick. It's great fun. In 2009 it was my first Hasler and I swam before the bridge. In 2010 I made it through the bridge and swam halfway down the straight. It was calm on the DW so, to make it interesting this year, I'm moving up a boat. Hope to see you there.

Dom - Paul Ralph had some at our Hasler. Kirton also had them in stock a month ago. Give them a call and I'm sure they'll sort you out. You should be able to tape it in (no glassing) with a standard footplate as a temporary measure.

Dom - it doesn't clash with Henly but it does clash with the Liffey! A bunch of us are going over for weir swimming practise so Poole will have to wait another year. Have fun. Marathon boats are fine but you'll need a strong deck.
