Re: Shrike, a lightweight sea kayak for home construction.^

Oisin and Al, thank you for your good wishes. I am truly knackered. There is a great range of hatch styles, sizes and layouts and you can see them in the Gallery. I don't put a hatch in the foredeck, but I put one in the foot bulkhead, unless the kayak is for expeditions. I try to fit two hatches in...

Re: Shrike, a lightweight sea kayak for home construction.^

Al, Damian is on the money, as always. Follow his excellent advice and you should be fine. When you joint the edges of the strips, make sure you use factory cut edges where possible, and use super glue with accelerator to tack the edges together before taping: https://bit.ly/2J3uQUO Where you will b...

Re: Shrike, a lightweight sea kayak for home construction.^

Al, do not despair! I've been in bed for 4 weeks with pneumonia, but I'll check my response tomorrow when my brain should be working a little better. Meanwhile, a few quick thoughts: 1. The panels can be re-constituted by simple butt-strapping, reinforced both sides with glass tape and resin. I woul...

Re: Why don’t manufacturers update their websites ?

The complexity of website maintenance for small businesses comes partly from dealing with corruption. For example, our local boatyard Wordpress site has a corrupted home page, with print on top of print. The couple that run the boatyard have no clue how to deal with that themselves. Another issue is...

Re: Why don’t manufacturers update their websites ?

I have every sympathy with small business owners. Even the "simplest" website is liable to corruption, even those built with packages like Wix or WordPress, and then "someone" has to fix it or carry out any necessary updates. This, of course, will cost time and/or money. I have been working with comp...

Re: Shrike, a lightweight sea kayak for home construction.^

Chris, I tend to work in the cloud, and back-up to my PC, but Dropbox (my cloud choice) unfortunately stopped the public sharing of files a couple of years ago. Sharing to particular email accounts is still enabled. I could doubtless open another cloud account elsewhere, but I currently have a Libre...

Re: Shrike, a lightweight sea kayak for home construction.^

Al, one can neither attach files to a forum post, nor to a PM, but If you want the data file (.stl file extension) today then PM me your email address and I can send it to you. Otherwise I will get the .stl file added to the download this weekend. Oisin, the commercial 3d printing is indeed far too ...

Re: Shrike, a lightweight sea kayak for home construction.^

We used to install these, but they are tricky to get right. Great care must be taken to remove all the resin from inside the tube. We've also found the occasional one that leaks, and then it's a game to seal the leak, which is why we now use 3D printing. The Shrike Build Manual (revised March 2018) ...

Re: Shrike, a lightweight sea kayak for home construction.^

Al, I presume you have looked at the four options described in the Build Manual (pages 30 to 35 in the latest revision, March 2018) We use our 3D printed deck fittings, usually in Nylon. There are at least five FabLabs (https://www.fabfoundation.org/) on the island of Ireland, where the public can us...

JB, there is a discussion on that forum about the Shrike kayak, and, as the originator of the Shrike project, I naturally wish to contribute to the discussion: https://www.seekajakforum.de/forum/read.php?1,114835 I would be grateful if you could contact an administrator of the forum to permit me to ...

Are you a forum member of seekajakforum.de?

The German sea kayaking forum is www.seekajakforum.de and it includes discussion of those who have built our Shrikes ( cnckayaks.com) I wish to take part in these discussions, but the forum anti-spam and anti-bot systems reject my membership application, which I presume is because my email and IP ad...

Al, I buy 3 litres of the non-blushing low viscosity MAS epoxy from here: https://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/product/mas-low-viscosity-epoxy-kit-slow-cure Epoxy is heavy and expensive, so try to use the minimum commensurate with strength. I use tongue depressors to form the fillets. By varying t...

Re: Strip plank

Boatsie, I built the first Vember using Pawlonia, as did Plymouth Damo for his Vember Expedition. The free Build Manual, included in the plans download as a PDF, shows this in photos. I now just use strips without the cove and bead, as described in the Manual. Making one's own cove and bead without ...

Re: Building a plug

Boatsie, have you also considered our strip-built Vember? Both Shrike and Vember can be scaled for length and beam in the paper print-out of the free plans PDFs, but with Vember one can also vary the beam and the length independently of each other: http://cnckayaks.com/vember/ You may have already r...
