Re: Cockpit rim repair

Can you not just slap a patch of glass on top, job done ?
With a bit of care in prep / sanding it shouldn't be terribly obvious and you can add as many layers as you feel necessary.

Thanks for all the comments guys.
Some good food for thought there and good to have some sources for fittings if I ever pursue this.

Re: GUL Mens Taw Drysuit

Depending on how much your postage costs, Id be inclined to order two sizes to try on at home with the intention of returning the one that doesn't fit. Before purchasing the Gul suit I actually did this with a couple of Palm suits, which I quite liked but one of which was too tight in the shoulders ...

Totally depends what sort of repair you are trying to do and where, cuts / tears / holes / general reinforcement ?

Re: GUL Mens Taw Drysuit

I have one and its fine. The fabric seems as waterproof as most suits I've owned but to my thinking is a lot heavier than it really needs to be so has a bit of a chunky feel to it. Perhaps because of this the neck, which the hood folds into, is very thick and stiff so if anything is more comfortable...

Re: mega thigh braces - what material?? / fixing

I've only ever seen the braces made from standard fibreglass matting so I suspect it will be ploy resin but it should matter a great deal if all you are doing is reinforcing where the bolt sits, just use what you have.

Re: Gelcoat damage on brand new kayak

I would agree with others that the gelcoat has not bonded to the fibreglass woven cloth. If you get a blunt tool like a screwdriver or rounded knife and are able to flake more of it off it will really prove the point. (If doing this I would suggest videoing it so you have a record of it) Normally if...

Re: Under Stern Rudder on Sea Kayak

Thanks for the comments. I don't think it would be possible to buy a complete retro-fit P&H Skudder and, as you say Karitek stopped making their system a while ago I believe. I remember a discussion with Geoff a number of years ago where the pistons had become prohibitively expensive, although TBH I...

Under Stern Rudder on Sea Kayak

Does anyone have experience of having retrospectively fitted an under-stern rudder to a sea kayak and able to advise on the success or otherwise of doing so ? I've recently been paddling a surfski a bit and am very impressed with their manoeuvrability on the rudder particularly when surfing either b...

Re: Surf ski seating adjustment

Aah, that makes rather more sense as I've paddled the closed cockpit version of the Skua (in Cape Town from the makers shop right on the waterfront !) and am familiar with how stable a boat it is. Have you thought about speaking to the importer or even contacting Arthur at Kazkazi directly as he is ...

Re: Surf ski seating adjustment

What ski is it ? I would suggest you may get more answers by posting this to one of the many dedicated surfski sites / FB pages as others will no doubt have experienced similar issue and a number of importers frequent those pages also and will have a wealth of knowledge. However, there is the possib...

Re: Surf ski seating adjustment

Aah, sorry I misunderstood. Padding the rear and base of the seat sounds like the way forward but obviously any increase to the seat height will significantly alter your centre of gravity and therefore stability so, personally, Id be inclined to start with fabricating the back rest. Ive used closed-...

Re: Surf ski seating adjustment

Im sure this was discussed previously so worth a search, altho that might have been on the Surfski Scotland Facebook page so may be worth looking there also. Assuming the foot track cannot be moved closer, which would of course mean drilling new holes, my gut feeling would be blocks of rigid closed-...

with it being able to be unwound + rewound by the user Not knowing which PLB model you have, is that in reference to the Ocean Signal RescueMe? That's good to know re customer service as one of my big concerns when buying was whether the aerial might be susceptible to damage with it being able to be unwound + rewound by the user. The suggestion re attaching to boat in order to keep aerial upright is an interesting one as it assumes your boa...

A sobering read Rod, thank you. Indeed, and as you say, no way any of us should be considering a PLB as our 'Get of jail free' card. Like others above, I have been waiting over 5 months on confirmation of my PLB registration but it does make me wonder if NOT having anyone to contact might actually ...

Re: Carrying flares

Having read this and a similar conversation on the SSKEG FB page I'm now seriously considering NOT replacing my out of date parachute flares. Like others I carry VHF and PLB so I'm increasingly of the opinion that the added value a Para flare adds is not sufficient to outweigh the risk of it not fir...

Re: Carrying flares

Yep, I feel flares still have their place (in addition to VHF and / or PLB) despite the cost v lifespan v likeliness to actually work when you need them.
I also believe that rescuers find them very useful when closing-in on the casualty, particularly for gauging wind direction for helicopters.

Re: Tiderace Moving Bulkhead ?

Fantastic, thanks for the reply Aled. If the current bulkhead has a 'biscuit-tin' lip on it, I'm guessing it would be a lot easier to cut the vertical face of the bulkhead and leave the lip on place so as to avoid any risk of cutting / sanding into the hull laminate itself. Sanding smooth and possib...

Tiderace Moving Bulkhead ?

Has anyone moved the forward bulkhead on a Tiderace boat and able to offer any advice please ? There appears to be a black sealant (similar to Sikaflex) ...

I cant help with an answer but watching as I'm hoping to be out there for a trip later in the year.

Have you tried contacting any of the surf centres as I would think they would know if there was someone renting sea kayaks, you might struggle to get any flat touring conditions though.

Re: car keys

For those using Aquapacs, are you just keeping these in a BA pocket ? I don't have any pockets in my surf BA so anything I carry has to go down my wetsuit and I found even the smallest the Aquapac to be too big and uncomfortable to bare, with the rigid closing mechanism digging in. I agree with othe...

Re: Werner paddle button jamming

If trying the insulating tape approach, it would probably be worth putting a wrap around the join as well as the button itself. You may find the tape over the button stretches enough to leave it in place and still operate the button. On my old-style proud button I made a chamfered shim to make it a ...
