Re: Surfski Wanted

There's a V8 for sale near Edinburgh just now, advertised on FB Surfski Scotland (and possibly other pages).

I cant seem to copy the thread but search and you'll find it I'm sure, asking price is £1000 I believe.

Re: Good Head Torch Recommendations ?

Thanks for everyone's replies but my experience of 100 / 200 lumen lights is that they are great for close-up stuff and general use, for example in a campsite, but don't really provide a sufficient pool of light to be of much use in a cave or similar environment. But please keep the suggestions comi...

Good to hear as that was the exact one I was looking at online earlier but wanted to see what came up in reply to the open question. ;-)

Good Head Torch Recommendations ?

I'm sure this has been done many times before but the latest threads I could find are a couple of years old so figured it was worth starting anew. So, can anyone recommend a decent head torch which has a good throw of light, is waterproof, is not the size of a brick and not ridiculously expensive ? ...

Re: best way to carry one piece paddles on Karitek rack?

Personally cant see it being an issue if they are suitably bagged. Id be inclined either to add a couple of dedicated eyelets to the rack and some padding to protect the shafts, or strap them to a kayak to reduce the overall windage and potential for flexion of the paddles. KT do a general purpose a...

Re: Transport for sea kayak from Edinburgh to Exeter??

There's a chance I will be driving to SW Wales in the next couple of weeks and could easily take a boat via Bristol in exchange for a fuel contribution.
PM me if that's of any use.

Fantastic, thanks for that. (Don't know why I didn't find it when I looked, oops.)
I'm about to order another boat from another manufacturer and wanted that same colour. :-)

Re: Safetrx - New CG and RYA vessel registration and tracking system

I have now tried 3 times to load the app to my phone and on each case it appears to load but will not open so is completely useless and, as far as I can establish, there in no way to log a route on the web site version so not terribly impressed. Personally I only ever contact the CG if I'm likely to...

Thanks guys.

All of that tends to confirm my suspicions that the one I have is the HV variant, not that it makes a huge difference unless I aim to resell it at some point in the future.

Re: Waist Tow Recommendations ?

Many thanks for the comments, I'll have a look at the Palm one also. Like you, I find that I have to make minor tweaks to the way a line is set up by the manufacturer - for example some come with a piece of bungee cord with the line simply tied to the end of that, meaning the bungee is always taking...

Re: Waist Tow Recommendations ?

Thanks for the comments. I looked at the HF one but its not really what I need in this case. Although I actually made something very similar myself years ago but found I never really needed the throw option so went back to a standard waist system for the vast majority of my paddling. Good to hear th...

Waist Tow Recommendations ?

Looking for any recommendations on an off-the-shelf waist tow system please as this is as a present for someone and I'm a bit out of touch with what's on the market. I personally have one of the older style (red) Peak ones which I quite like - easy to use, large enough to be easy to repack, all fitt...

Re: Tiderace Xtra Standard / HV

Thanks, that's useful and I don't remember foot room being an issue in the Xtra I have access to but its rather dependant upon leg length and how much one angles ones feet out, I would have thought.

Any other wisdom out there please ?

Tiderace Xtra Standard / HV

This may seem like an odd question but is there an easy way to discern between a Standard Xtra and an HV variant ? Looking at the figures online there is no difference in length or cockpit, only 0.5 cm difference in width and 2m in depth, any of which could be a bit awkward to measure accurately wit...

Can you not just slap a patch of glass on top, job done ?
With a bit of care in prep / sanding it shouldn't be terribly obvious and you can add as many layers as you feel necessary.

Re: GUL Mens Taw Drysuit

Depending on how much your postage costs, Id be inclined to order two sizes to try on at home with the intention of returning the one that doesn't fit. Before purchasing the Gul suit I actually did this with a couple of Palm suits, which I quite liked but one of which was too tight in the shoulders ...

Re: GUL Mens Taw Drysuit

I have one and its fine. The fabric seems as waterproof as most suits I've owned but to my thinking is a lot heavier than it really needs to be so has a bit of a chunky feel to it. Perhaps because of this the neck, which the hood folds into, is very thick and stiff so if anything is more comfortable...

Re: mega thigh braces - what material?? / fixing

I've only ever seen the braces made from standard fibreglass matting so I suspect it will be ploy resin but it should matter a great deal if all you are doing is reinforcing where the bolt sits, just use what you have.

Re: Gelcoat damage on brand new kayak

I would agree with others that the gelcoat has not bonded to the fibreglass woven cloth. If you get a blunt tool like a screwdriver or rounded knife and are able to flake more of it off it will really prove the point. (If doing this I would suggest videoing it so you have a record of it) Normally if...

Re: Under Stern Rudder on Sea Kayak

Thanks for the comments. I don't think it would be possible to buy a complete retro-fit P&H Skudder and, as you say Karitek stopped making their system a while ago I believe. I remember a discussion with Geoff a number of years ago where the pistons had become prohibitively expensive, although TBH I...

Under Stern Rudder on Sea Kayak

Aah, that makes rather more sense as I've paddled the closed cockpit version of the Skua (in Cape Town from the makers shop right on the waterfront !) and am familiar with how stable a boat it is. What ski is it ? Re: Surf ski seating adjustment

Aah, sorry I misunderstood. Padding the rear and base of the seat sounds like the way forward but obviously any increase to the seat height will significantly alter your centre of gravity and therefore stability so, personally, Id be inclined to start with fabricating the back rest. Ive used closed-...

Im sure this was discussed previously so worth a search, altho that might have been on the Surfski Scotland Facebook page so may be worth looking there also.
