Re: high top transit roof rack advise please

Thanks for the reply. Certainly sounds interesting. My experience of the Karitek ELRR and HLRR is that they work very well so long as you are able to keep the bars completely parallel whilst lifting them but if not, eg parked on a slope or unevenly positioned boats, they have a bit of a tendency to ...

Re: New paddles?

If you like your current VEs, Id just buy a joint piece, cut them in half and fit a Celtic Padlock joint. Its easy enough to do if you're careful. One thing to remember, if you want the two pieces to be the same length for use as splits at any time, the cut need to be a bit off centre to allow for t...

Re: high top transit roof rack advise please

I have one of the Outside Engineering LARS systems fitted to a 2.5m high Fiat Ducato. Do you have any pics of that please as I had the impression it may not have worked on higher vehicles as there was a need for the cross bars to extend above the roofline when in the lowered position (to provide th...

Re: high top transit roof rack advise please

Ive owned 2 high top Transits and now have an extra high roof Citroen Relay and wouldnt use anything other than a KT rack. Its not perfect and does still require a fair bit of grunt on high vehicles but I havent come across anything comparable. Where are you based as I have an older KT rack for sale...

Re: Kayaks banned from Surf Snowdonia

RIDICULOUS !! Whilst kayakers are never going to be a big part of their income they really should be accommodating all surf users (IMO). If there has been some sort of incident then they need to manage those using the waves as well as crowd levels, and work together with the paddling community rathe...

Re: Stroke Rate on Garmin Fenix ?

I use a Vaaka Cadence Sensor paired with a Garmin 310xt. I cannot see why one of those monitors would not pair with a Fenix. Thanks for the comments but the whole point of the question was to utilise the functionality of the device I already own and NOT having to buy yet another widget to provide t...

Re: Stroke Rate on Garmin Fenix ?

I completely understand about not being interested in racing, but if I use a 'racing' stroke at cruising speed (i.e. same technique but lower rate) the boat glides along much more easily than before I improved my technique (and started racing). Exactly. But for me its more a curiosity thing really....

Re: Stroke Rate on Garmin Fenix ?

Having now had a look at the SUP widget it appears spot on - Stroke Rate as well as distance per stroke and speed so should be able to provide everything I need. Also, as I own sea boats between 16 and 18’ as well as an FSK, it could be interesting to gauge how much more efficient the longer / skinn...

Re: Stroke Rate on Garmin Fenix ?

Thanks for the SUP app suggestion, I’ll take a look st that. As for whether it’s necessary, that’s an entirely different thing and totally subject to an individuals objectives. However, if for the sake of argument, in a given craft, I can decrease my stroke rake and maintain the same hull speed, tha...

Stroke Rate on Garmin Fenix ?

Anyone own a Garmin Fenix 5 and found a way to get Stroke Rate to show in the Kayak setting ? Or alternatively a 3rd party app that will do so please ? Strangely, if you choose “Indoor Rowing” it defaults to show stroke rate (presumably based on an accelerometer measuring arm movements) but has no o...

Re: Best Expedition Fast Sea Kayak Options?

Id be interested to know how those who have owned or paddled the Epic 16x find it compares to similar boats from other manufacturers in both speed and stability. I've only ever read good reviews of the Epic but it is by far the widest of these style of boats at a quoted 58.4cm. The Taran 18 is 52cm,...

Why the Maverick ?
Not to everyone's taste unless you are quite light weight, the Neutron is a lot more user friendly I would suggest.

There was a PE Neutron in Falkirk recently on FB but looks to be sold now.

Thanks for the reply. On looking further I realised I can do that from the existing data fields available on the Fenix 5. And meanwhile there are call-outs to PLB / EPIRB activations from devices which are not registered so the owner cannot be traced to confirm if a false alarm.

Like this one recently in Eyemouth -

Re: PLB protection

For sea kayaking I'm happy with mine just in my PFD pocket but for dedicated surfing (only if its big and I'm solo or a long way off shore) I tend to just stick it in a zip-lock bag first, leaving the lanyard out to tied to a strap or similar. I'm not overly concerned about the bag not being 100% wa...

Old Head of Kinsale is well worth doing, the fun of paddling through multiple (50m ?) long passages underneath a golf course with flat calm on one side and possibly lively on the other, subject to conditions.

Thanks for everyone's replies but my experience of 100 / 200 lumen lights is that they are great for close-up stuff and general use, for example in a campsite, but don't really provide a sufficient pool of light to be of much use in a cave or similar environment. But please keep the suggestions comi...

Good Head Torch Recommendations ?

I'm sure this has been done many times before but the latest threads I could find are a couple of years old so figured it was worth starting anew. Re: best way to carry one piece paddles on Karitek rack?

Personally cant see it being an issue if they are suitably bagged. Id be inclined either to add a couple of dedicated eyelets to the rack and some padding to protect the shafts, or strap them to a kayak to reduce the overall windage and potential for flexion of the paddles. KT do a general purpose a...
