Re: SKUK Latitude vs. Pilgrim-X

I recently had the opportunity to try both the Latitude and Pilgrim-X. I am not terribly large or tall at 175 cm (5' 9") with a 77.5 cm (30.5") inseam, or heavy at 152 pounds (69 kg), but regrettably both demo boats were apparently outfitted for paddlers smaller than myself. I was told the subject L...

Re: North Shore Ocean 17

The two Ocean 17.6 examples I have seen were beautifully finished and built. I would have preferred the rear deckline on the starboard side to go right up to the rear of the cockpit instead of finishing behind the day hatch. My one concern is the use of the "contoured bulkheads". The North Shore we...

Re: North Shore Ocean 17

Has anyone demoed the new Ocean 17? The posted specs put it in the range of "all-round" sea kayaks that I tend to gravitate toward. Regrettably it will be a little while before it shows up on our side of the pond. I guess I will answer my own inquiry. I picked-up a North Shore Ocean 17 last fall (2...

Re: Suggestions for P&H Skeg slider replacement in Scorpio?^

Has anyone replaced their original P&H skeg slider with 'version 2' in a Scorpio? The slider in my Scorpio LV has become rather tough to operate even with repeated lubrication. It has been suggest to use a heat gun to remove the original slider assembly, but my concern is that it will damage the po...

Re: Suggestions for P&H Skeg slider replacement in Scorpio?

Can't help with the specific query Joe, but what type of system is it? Wire - or the troublesome bungee and cord system, with a release catch on the slider knob? Mike, It's the relatively new (since 2007?) bungee and cord system with the release catch on the slider knob. Mine is the first version o...

Re: Tiderace will it reduce retail costs?

From the prospective of this paddler in the United States, TideRace kayaks are very appealing, but their current price structure here is a bit higher than comparable 'British' boats from NDK, Valley, North Shore, and P&H. Factor in some excellent sea kayaks produced in Canada (Boreal, Maelstrom, NF,...

How about Freya Hoffmeister? She is current just past the half-way mark in her circumnavigation of Australia by kayak! This trip has only been completed by one other person, Paul Caffyn, over 27 years ago. At Freya's current place she will come in well under Paul's time. Freya has also circumnavigat...

Get a set of Park cable and housing cutters from a good bike shop (not all LBS's stock them), they are very sturdy, sharp and have good mechanical advantage. They slice through multistrand wire cables without causing the wires to unwind, and are tough enough to also cut the outer casings without co...

Prompt action by Valley. The replacement skeg slider and sheath arrived less than twenty four hours after I rang. Mistakes happen, so I think you can tell a lot by how companies put them right. re: Can Puncher device

Slightly off thread I know, but what do you do with those gas canisters that are almost empty. I'm not quite sure how you dispose of them. Aside from the old favourite of throwing them in the bonfire on Nov 5th and seeing how many small children you can decapitate. You can go with something like th...

BCU week @ SKG '05

Zoe,
I attended in the Fall of 2005 and had a wonderful time.
Water temperatures that time of year on the Georgia coast are around 68-70 degrees F (20-21C).
SKG runs a very nice operation and hosted many paddlers from far away places. A number of noteable coaches came from the UK.
