Re: Insurance and qualifications

Hi Seawolf, Sounds like your rescue went well with a successful outcome. Great stuff! Now, you mentioned about claim culture. As I understand, should there have been an incident with some sort of tragic outcome, an individual or family member could indeed take out a Civil case against you, which wou...

'My First Trip Round the 'Stacks' (Anglesey)

This lovely and well written article by my good friend evokes so many emotions! I have been lucky to paddle many wonderful places but the 'Stacks' is stunningly beautiful and I have many memories of friends and fun times around this place. Even if it has cost me some adrenaline! Selfishly, I was so ...

Hi there, A lazy response! I did a quick internet search and came up with this:- http://www.sdkc.org/safety/lightning-strikes-and-paddling/ We have been caught out in 'close' thunder and lightning on a few occasions. Very disconcerting, especially when waving carbon paddles around (antenna) and sitt...

Hi there! Well, clearly a fabulous design! There again, the pedigree of design from Tiderace is second to none. Now, hypothetically speaking, ... Don't think my wife uses this site... And cutting to the 'chase', how much? Waiting times? And should I bust it...because I will, do Tiderace/Nelo have 'f...

Re: Carrying flares

Hi Seawolf, Assuming the same thing, I had a pack of those. Almost like shotgun cartridges which fit on the end of a 'pen', fired by pulling back and releasing a spring loaded firing pin? I had heard they had a poor reputation for reliability. However, mine went on a bonfire night extravaganza, year...

Hi Folks, Well, I guess we are all going through similar considerations at the moment? Here's where we are upto with our thinking. A few years ago, several of us were involved in a rescue, I imagine not very far from the incident under discussion. See https://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/forum/viewto...

Trip planning in Donegal?

Our group and family enjoy walking and bad weather alternatives in local villages and towns. To help planning our trip, any ideas where we ...

Bikes on Karitek roof rack?

Hi Folks,
I have seen pictures of bikes on Karitek roof racks but not in sufficient detail. I would be really interested if anyone has thoughts about carrying both on their Karitek and how the bike is attached?

Many thanks,

Hi ron-t, First off, my apologies if I appear to be nit picking over phraseology. That was really not intended at all! I have been an 'endorsed leader' (in the context of this discussion) for many years and I am now looking to explore the new Coaching qualifications. Until early retirement I was a S...

Hi Chris,
Interesting! And I agree with the points you made in answer to my question. What do you see as the key competencies required of a Coach, separate to those of a 'Leader'?

Re: British Canoeing Sea Kayak Coach

We don't have to have Coaches or Leaders! And as mentioned earlier in this thread there are many groups who perform at top levels without 'formal' BC endorsed qualifications. Thus, to open up the debate a few questions which BC must have asked themselves before this review, but would be interesting ...

Re: Chlorinated swimming pools and neoprene

Hi Adrian, I guess most likely to add some sort of hypochlorite. Molecules and ions present will depend on pool conditions, notably pH. Either way the anion formed from hypochlorite in water is a strong oxidising agent. Fortunately, an excellent way of killing bacteria but equally capable of attacki...

Re: Chlorinated swimming pools and neoprene

Chlorine molecules (not as the ion, 'chloride') are highly likely to damage any elasticated kit!
I think someone else may have mentioned the damaging effects on swimming costumes, although the 'endurance' variety last a lot longer.
I would most certainly rinse kit.

How much effort are you expecting on this warm trip? For me, any effort and 'boil in the bag', excessive sweating along with potential dehydration and just miserable, are very real risks. Quite clearly, you have to make the call to judge the environment you will be in. However, surely there's a comp...

Re: Personal Performance Awards - review

Simon Westgarth emphasises value over cost. Clearly, an important point. However, I would also like to emphasise the significance of course cost in paddle sport. To progress significantly along the coaching or skills/leading pathway is very expensive!.....Unless paid for as professional development....
