Fence crossing river Dee, Corwen

For river paddlers of the Dee..... I'm sure paddlers will be aware of this but if not and you are planning to paddle the Dee near Corwen, please be aware there is a significant fence (multiple posts) crossing the river. I'm sorry not to be able to give grid refs. (No map with me) But the fence can b...

Re: Effective VHF Coverage

Hi Northern Blue,
And please, please excuse my 'teaching to suck eggs' comments...
First off, are you fully depressing the ptt switch? ... The radio registering you are transmitting?
Secondly, is the antenna fully screwed on?
....Two very simple faults I have recently seen!

The Environment Agency, along with Roger Drummond produced, 'Canoeists Guide' to the River Severn. It only takes you down as far as Gloucester but Roger may well be a good source of information. I believe his Son(s) once did a similar journey to yours.

Re: Play the sea

I'm very biased and would suggest you consider the Xtra you mentioned. You may well be aware there is a low volume version? Also, the Tiderace Vortex should be up there for consideration. A most excellent plastic boat.

Good luck!

Re: Should a 4* Leader be a 5* Follower?

Hi Chris, I'm really enjoying the debate! First off, to anyone reading this please, please refer to the article first and not just to the comments made. Chris, I note your examples of good followership. Actually, not very far from the key points made by Kelley (1988) in the article. And as noted; 'I...

Re: Should a 4* Leader be a 5* Follower?

Hi Jim, And interesting comments! The purpose of the article was to apply similar thoughts to followership in paddle sport as are currently being considered in other arenas, where Leadership and Followership are seen as different but interdependent entities. My (personal) emphasis was to try and hig...

Re: Should a 4* Leader be a 5* Follower?

Hi Chris, I agree my title is rather tongue in cheek and therefore misleading. I purposely didn't use current BC titles. Drawing on the research and practice from other arenas, I am suggesting that engaged Followership skills are not only important to the outcome of the adventure but an essential ap...

Should a 4* Leader be a 5* Follower?

The essential skill of 'Followership'...

I hope this is not seen as too controversial but a good topic for debate?

Absolutely brilliant, seawolf! The 'Straits' are a very beautiful and historic place. The tides are interesting! I can 'hear' in your post the adventure and fun you had. So good! Sometimes the rewards seem even sweater following the hardship of winter paddling. Im sure the sense of adventure goes up...

Re: PLB protection

Hi Chris, I report comments made to me by Ocean Signal, manufacturers of PLB1. But it all makes sense! 'In extremis' it's worth giving everything a go! I know from my own, limited knowledge of radio (amateur radio) that matching the antenna to the transmitter is essential. In this case pulling it ou...

Hi Robert Craig,

The reference I have is 'personal communication' with the manufacturer. Makes sense, though. I'm not trying to advocate such use but in 'extremis', it's worth a try.

Re: PLB protection

Hopefully, none of us will need these devices!
However, plb1 and presumably the 'fast find' will work with the antenna wound down. But not so well, according to the manufacturer.
Please excuse stating the obvious but it seemed relevant.

Re: Carrying flares

Hi Seawolf, Assuming the same thing, I had a pack of those. Almost like shotgun cartridges which fit on the end of a 'pen', fired by pulling back and releasing a spring loaded firing pin? I had heard they had a poor reputation for reliability. However, mine went on a bonfire night extravaganza, year...
