Re: What do you wear when surf kayaking???

I think a lot depends on what you mean by surfing. For me this is quite an active experience. Also the local breaks I go to, my vehicle is quite nearby when I get out. If I am cold when I get out it's only a few minutes to dry clothes. Also I am in Brighton, so always a warmer than Jim!! I wear a 2m...

Club Trip ideas for South (west?) Wales

As there is little to paddle at the moment, I started thinking of organising a club trip somewhere new! We usually do trips to North Wales, Dartmoor and have been to Yorkshire. We also go to the Wye and Cardiff IWWC. We've never gone further west - it is a long slog from Brighton. I personally go to...

Re: can you surf a Burn 2 in the sea?

@bossingit If you're Jason in a light blue marbled Bullitt XS we met the other day with my mate Chris (also in a Bullitt XS) I paddle the silver glitter Proton. If not Jason, Pipe or Harbour or between locally, or at Martlet Kayak Club between the Pier and Marina locally. @questatron The things that...

Re: can you surf a Burn 2 in the sea?

It depends on how you define "surf". My club is on the beach in Brighton and so I use a Hoss to coach/look after paddles. I find the if I'm out in any waves it is nothing like "surfing" in my proper boats. It can be fun, but on big cleaner waves the best you can hope for in a creek/river boat is to ...

Mega Surf Kayaks Redux

Just wanted to post a quick review on the "new" Mega now Malcom has retired from the day to day running of the business and its relocated to Fordingbridge. My boat is the first one made in the new factory. Its a Proton in Xtec. I spoke to Arron on the 14th September and talked through what I wanted ...

Re: Larger paddler, longtime kayaker, which first surf boat?

I can not believe nobody has recommended a Bullit S yet, for what you are after I would have thought it would be the ideal boat. Glyn Brackenbury surfs one very well and I am pretty sure he is no smaller than yourself. Denzil Post by StoneWeasel » Wed Sep 24, 2014 12:41 pm Glynn Brackenbury at Sker...

Re: Larger paddler, longtime kayaker, which first surf boat?

Hi again Phil - If it helps my club has a Bullitt which I occasionally paddle. However, personally I find that I feel I'm at the top of the size to get in it. I think one of the older Mega Jesters is a bigger boat - I think its the Titan version. Again not one I've paddled. I found it hard to work o...

Re: Larger paddler, longtime kayaker, which first surf boat?

Hi Phil, I'm about 6' and 14.5 stone. I have owned and paddled the plastic Mega Neutron in the past. Definately too small for you! Currently paddle a Mega Scarab Superlite which fits me brilliantly and instantly felt right after struggling in the Neutron. However, friends only an inch or two bigger ...

Being paid to coach....

Looking for a bit of advice. I'm an up to date BCU Level 2 Coach and do voluntary sessions at my club every Thursday. I am starting a business to try and do some paid kayak/canoe/sit on top coaching. In addition to my BCU 3rd party insurance do I need to take out any other insurance? I'm a full time...

Re: wetsuit vs drysuit

I think it depends on where you're paddling and how active you are. I would bake in a 4mm wetsuit even in February down here on the south coast even without the trousers and cag! I started off in my first general purpose river kit in the surf. First moved to non latex neck seal cags (Reed, in my cas...

Re: storms down south...anyone out?

You need to find a sheltered break! Sadly few of these will be novice friendly, and will tend to be very crowded on good days, especially when so accurately forecast, for so long in advance. I was out at Soldiers (opp side of harbour from these boardies) on Sunday and Monday and it was VERY crowded!...

If you're surfing Shoreham, the local surf report is http://www.sharkbait.co.uk/todayssurf.htm It is always a tad over-optimistic as is MSW! :)

Old school surf kayaks - ARROWCRAFT MARINE SURF YAK KAYAK

For those of us interested in such things, I've just seen this for sale on Ebay. Its a very good looking square ended surf kayak! It looks like it has its original finish and logo..... I especially like those knee pods! http://i.ebayimg.com/t/ARROWCRAFT-MARINE-SURF-YAK-KAYAK-/00/s/MTYwMFg4OTg=/z/ATs...

@ bossingit I surf the Harbour and Carats etc in a silver Scarab, give me a shout if we meet - its showing 3ft at 19 secs on MSW at Shoreham at the mo, but 47 mph gusts!!! Got me excited 'til I saw the likliehood - 6 %!
But you have to be optimistic! ;o)

Re: Pin pricks

Cheers for advice so far! Simon - there appear to be too many, too far apart to patch. Also they are so small, that even after filling the arm up inside out with water and marking some of them they are invisible!!! Ginge - interested in the idea of low temp ironing. Has anyone else done this success...

Pin pricks

After meeting a trailing bramble my lovely new dry cag isn't so dry any more! It has lots of tiny punctures that let water in very slowly along one arm. They are too small to see and spread over a large area. Will reproofing with something solve this, or is it now a deceased Dry Cag? Any suggestions...

Re: Recommend me a surf boat.

Hi Liam - I'm 6' about your weight and size 11 feet. After plastic river boat surfing, my first surf boat was a plastic Mega Neutron . However, despite squeezing into it and loving the difference it makes on a wave, I do think I was too heavy for it. Try one yourself but I wouldn't recommend it to y...

Riot Dominatrix 54 - "The Big Dom"

Good allround boat design in used but reasonably good condition. I have paddled it on the Upper Dart (grade 4+ water) and surfed Esky Point in Ireland in it. Upgraded Bombardier backband fitted and replacement stainless steel ratchets on the thigh braces. Adjustable foot rests from ratchet in front ...
