Re: "Are you thinking about developing a hydropower scheme"

I'm just highlighting the event to people who might be interested in going. It would seem useful to have some sort of formal representation, e.g. BCU, on whatever steering groups/committees are being formed especially as microhydro schemes could be seen as a threat to recreational paddling under som...

No one interested in talking about small scale hydro then?

Disappointing.

"Are you thinking about developing a hydropower scheme"

Some of you may be interested in attending the follow conference:
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/bu ... 00516.aspx

Seem ridiculous to only have representation from one major set of water users. Obviously we need to have kayakers/canoeists/swimmers formally represented.

Does anyone know what the progress is with the road building? Like how far up the gorge they've got?

We paddled the Tsarp and Zanskar in mid september 2008 - and had a fantastic trip with a mixed abiity group. Tom,
Will you be wearing your dry cag for your fishing adventures, or are you going to go the whole hog and get the full kit straight away?

Dunno for sure, but when I was in the hills north of madrid for climbing a few years back it was pretty dry and desert like.

Re: SAFFA 1975 Act, the new reason why we cannot paddle rivers

Hi Conwy R, I don't think that police involvement is required as there was no assault only verbal intimidation. Just the usual stuff: "I hate people like you", "Fuck off", "you're not allowed to be here, angling club rules". He did however, show me his EA identity card - and we did have a semi-sensi...

Re: SAFFA 1975 Act, the new reason why we cannot paddle rivers

I had an interesting informal chat this afternoon with someone who works in the EA's fisheries department in Cardiff. Apparently the EA are in the process of using sonar equipment to assess the impact of passing kayaks on spawning grounds / redds. So here's hoping for a positive result. Perhaps some...

I would have loved to go on fishing classes when I were a lad! Brilliant idea. Anything which gets kid out in to see some nature is good imho. Don't think I would have every tried kayaking if I hadn't alread been into mtbing, and wouldn't have started doing big mtb routes if I hadn't already got a b...

* From a criminal perspective - Suppose the law surrounding the navigation on the rivers you list is clarified (not necessarily changed) in future? Re: SAFFA 1975 Act, the new reason why we cannot paddle rivers

We pay through i) membership of the WCU or BCU ii) our taxes, some of which go to the EA for the upkeep of rivers and the other good work that they do. iii) our water company standing charges, some of which go towards ensuring clean water in the rivers. Any others? We don't pay the EA to look after ...

Re: SAFFA 1975 Act, the new reason why we cannot paddle rivers

I thought that angling club officials act as bailiffs on behalf of the EA, no?

Certainly the guy I spoke to (who shouted and swore at me) was (a) fishing the river, was (b) in charge of other anglers, and (C) had an EA card.

Fishguard?

Re: SAFFA 1975 Act, the new reason why we cannot paddle rivers

Its interesting that Fishguard has mentioned the "precautionary principle" a couple of times now. This is essentially the "better safe than sorry" approach and although it has never been used in a UK law, it has been used to direct policy - such as EA internal policy on how to interpret various regu...

Gordon, "test case" means a case tested in a court of law.

Also the laws (rights of access etc) in Scotland are different to those in England and Wales.

Afon Afan was awesome this afternoon, Big Bouncy Grade 4, with holes and stoppers everywhere lol and surprisingly enough no eddies lol Nice choice, I cycled over it last night and it still looked quite big compared to the Tawe and Neath. Dogger Dave, were you one of the "Bangor students" who received a warning letter from the EA under SAFFA 1975?

I am worried that this may set a precedent. Can anyone find the link to the the thread with the details of that incident?

That was brilliant. If, perhaps, a little harsh on the EA.
You could include it in your response to the Nation Assembly for Wales Inquiry http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/foru ... =3&t=52790
(Or keep it short and sweet as suggested.)
