Re: Getting in the flow

Your 4% is worth comparing to the "just noticeable difference" observed by Ernst Heinrich Weber ...... which he observed as 5% for weight differences - and Fechner assumed applied to all senses - a questionable assumption!

Re: PFD - Do you ever paddle without one?

Depends upon the canal! Back in the BWB days the bridgekeepers on the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal included officious guys who seemed to look for reasons to ask you to leave the water - but most took the view that if you looked as if you knew what you were doing they would leave you alone. Nowadays th...

Re: Access Motion to BC AGM

Yes I am talking about the tryweryn, and if they charged for facilities as they claim it would not bother me but the only people chargesd are those who pass down river so to me it is a charge to pass down the river. This is not acceptable and B.C. said this was not initially, they now seen to have ...

I started in my forties, peaked in my early fifties and am gently declining into my sixties. You will become more risk-averse as you become older ..... but stay with it - kayaking is not all about G4/G5 - you can get enjoyment from developing other paddlers, putting your 15' foot open canoe into the...

Do the course providers not supply the kit required as i have seen some supply all kit needed.
Some do, some don't ...... It is not a requirement to provide suitable kit - indeed part of the course is looking at kit to see how suitable it is.

Re: WWSR Course

A dry suit! I always tell people that they need to be competent paddling Grade 2 and okayish on Grade 3 - otherwise they will not get the most out of a WWSR course. You will get wet - swimming - throwline work - you don't want to be wearing a wet wetsuit with the wind blowing through it.

Re: New MKII Scorpio, or buy a used 2010(?) model?

Nothing wrong with a used boat if money is tight .... you might have to wait a couple of months for delivery to get what you want new! The MkII has the option of the "scudder" - I'd stick with just the skeg. The Corelite version is noticeably lighter when it comes to putting the boat on the car roof...

Ran the section from Glyndyfrdwy to Horseshoe Sunday 3 December. About 0.8 m on the gauge at Corwen which was a good level. Something like 8 pairs of fishermen out, mostly silent but one or two did wave and even say Hello!

Re: End of a dream?

In reference to my original post, can I ask who are the owners of the whitewater courses in the UK and how was the construction financed? I think the Nene WW Course was financed by Lottery money. It is home to a canoe club and a rowing club - but no longer the novelty it was in the early 2000s .......

Maybe the FIRST question for a Personal Performance Review should be - What are they for? Maybe for young people they provide some kudos - but for adul...

No such thing as a stupid question - just stupid answers. There are probably a lot of people with the same question - but they lack the courage to ask! Are you going out for a day practicing rescues? No - so don't wear a dry suit! If the sea conditions are such that you reasonably expect to stay in ...

Re: Kayak design, how to determine handling in wind?

To a first approximation it must depend upon the projected area of the boat presented to wind ....... So you want the projected area in front of the axis of rotation to be equal to the projected area behind the axis of rotation. Here is a thought ... could you mount a skeg at the bow as well as the ...
