Re: EA Gauge Changes

Most of the gauges on the weirs of the Thames just tell you the head and tail river levels either side of the lock. IME this does not really tell you much except in really extreme cases, as the whole point of the weirs / gates is to give you a consistent river level. There are however flow gauges on...

Re: EA Gauge Changes

And this is why we should have open access to government data. All of the services mentioned above use the same data. Shoothill "own" the api for access to the EA gauge data, so if you want to build a webapp which uses this government data, you have to pay them for it, however good luck getting a re...

Re: Map Apps

What is not to like? Simon I found it ugly and some of the user interface annoying. Granted I haven't used it for a while. The ability to use multiple maps is it's big draw. It may not be the sexiest app or the most advanced. But if you want to add way markers and notes to share then I would sugges...

They could of got Kim Kardashian to promote canoeing and the residents here would have probably complained.

Probably just a cheaper way to fail/disappoint internet forum dwellers.

Re: Alternatives to crossovers?

It sounds to me that a crossover is exactly the boat you need. Hatches make packing stuff easier. Skegs help on flat water. And I can only speak for a katana (as I have not paddled the others) but it will easily handle the classic white water touring runs like the loop, dee, tryweryn.

First of all, big thanks all involved in the magazine. I have some good memories of the magazines in their various guises and they have played their part in the history of paddling in the uk. I hope that all the people involved can find some new opportunies and exciting challenges either in paddling...

I have flown / trained to briancon.

I flew to Geneva. Then train to briancon. There was a couple of changes. Was not a bad journey. This was 15 yrs ago though. Milan might be easier now. Flights to Geneva were a pittance then.

Re: Advice on playboat

Why the g-force? Is it really cheap? With proper technique you can bow stall any of the short play boat generation. However if I wanted to buy a playboat and I did not want to spunk the best part of a grand. I would go and find whichever 2010 Jackson star size fitted best and buy a second hand one. ...

Re: Holne Bridge Layby

Hmmm, some amusing responses to my question. I am fully aware that you pay a vehicle excise license, however, your car is not legally allowed on a highway without displaying a tax disc and the common nomenclature is road tax. Highways are paid for by taxation, so in effect even if you don't own a ca...

Re: Slippery paddle shafts

The solution is either a. Wax, which makes a mess - in your car when it gets hot and melts ( which it will, quite easily ) or. B. Mud, grab a hand full of silt from the river, and rub onto your paddle shaft. Make it part of your getting in routine. In effect you are sanding the paddle, but you are n...

Re: Have artificial whitewater courses taken a step backward

As a trivia point, HPP was originally designed to be adjustable I believe. It is adjustable. It has blocks that can be moved and rearranged, and often are for slalom competitions. It is now! It has not been throughout its life. HPP had a mjor remodel about 3-4 yrs ago, where they put in rapid block...

Re: Have artificial whitewater courses taken a step backward

Like most people commenting, I am not a course designer. But I will happily give you my opinion. I think the reason has already been given, flexibility. However, its not just about flexibility of use. Whitewater is incredibly hard to model. You cannot scale it up or down. And whilst you can do some ...

Re: campervan rear door rack for boats

I have a bike rack on the back of my campervan (high top). In the past i have placed a playboat on it. It can easily hold the weight, the issue is that if you lash it horizantally -depending on relative widths - it can stick out the side of the van. Lashing it vertically works better, but obscures t...

The whole ICE thing leaves me a bit perplexed. It does not ensure that anyone finds you any quicker. It does not mean you will get any treatment quicker. If you are in such a state that you are unable to communicate who you are, then there are other priorities at the scene of the incident more impor...
