Paddlers late afternoon run on Upper Dart no torch/light ????!!! Did they know the foot path to Venford Res was close by?????!!!!!! If they had suitable safety kit (map torch etc.) and knew where they were. They could have walked out. Saving the rescue services time, money and trouble. But good they...

Re: Alps- Water Levels

Hi All Did the Onde today on a good medium level then the Gyronde which was at a high level due to the Barrage being fully open (I think that they are doing some work on it at the moment) The reason the Valouise barrage gates are open is because they are working on the tubes taking the water to the...

Thought on the gyronde Hi I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but I live just above the gyronde and have come across 5 groups of boaters having a few issues so far this season. now all the groups dealt with it well as far as I know, but they all have some point is common, they put in just below...

Very sad to hear about the loss of Josef Haas. My much duct taped copy of his 'Gems of White Water of the HIGH ALPS' is still pride of place on my book shelves. It was truly inspirational on those early trips to the French Alps. The high quality photographic plates are still great, fantastic images ...

In 1996 after the wild adventures on the upper section, I thought this bottom section from the Sanni Bheri to the kanali was great. But we had very high water as we went in a month earlier than Jerry Moffitt the previous year, also the monsoon finished a month later. We just sat back and watched the...

Get in touch with PGL. They've got a base in Embrum, just down the road from Briancon. If you can get a place with them you can coach and they'll pay you (albeit not very much) and put you up, then on your spare days you can get out paddling as well. PGL Closed their base in Embrun some some five y...

Re: South French Alps Water Levels from the River Bank

Up until last Sat 30 June the hot weather was still with us, temp's were up to 29c which was creating great melt water from the glaciers. However Sunday and Monday saw light rain over the Ecrin. These two cooler days slowed the melt and rivers dropped off. But yesterday again was very hot and today ...

Just back from a superb weekend in the French Alps - a great party at Stuart's, and fantastic levels in the rivers. We ran the Guil (Chateau to lake), Durance gorge and Guisane - all with clear blue water and lovely medium levels. And there is still some snow left up in the mountains - so the fun a...

Re: South French Alps Water Levels from the River Bank

Great water levels continue in the South French Alps. After a few days of light rain and little sun, yesterday a big storm hit the Ecrin. This has put levels up on most rivers flowing off those mountains. The Guil however has not been effected by the rain, is running blue and at a great paddling lev...
