Re: Devizes to Westminster 2014

Well done all of you!! We gave it a miss this year. And I had persuaded myself that I had come to terms with it, slow river, bad finger, blah blah usual justifications. But then we were in Newbury on Saturday. So what harm in a little look? Saw some guys we knew, cheered them on. Felt wistful. On th...

Good luck!

We're giving it a miss this year, but 2015 training starts next week...

Have a great race, and remember to enjoy it!

Re: dwrace 2013

Sorry to hear about your crew Liz - sounds like the accumulation of a number of things. Can't have been much fun for her immediately below Hambledon where the current comes in from the left, which I personally think is a horrid spot in the dark. We thought Fobney would be empty but when we got there...

Re: dwrace 2013

Thanks!! We were fortunate enough to be first boat in at Westminster so got a massive cheer there, which was fantastic. Lots of ice on the deck, front rope frozen up, GPS encased in ice and so on... My toes are still numb today. And it looks like we won the old paddlers class, so that's a huge bonus...

Just writing out support instructions for a new supporter who will be supporting half the race solo! No risk there then!!

Re: dwrace 2013

Yes, we handed in our cheque after WS D, so we've got that much commitment now (£140!) to our fourth DW. Although if the DW is like WS D then it will truly be a connoisseurs' race - worse than 2008 when at least it was cold and clear for the canal. Are you supporting the four day or the straight thr...

Re: dwrace 2013

So a few years ago the DW thread was a lively community, loads of people sharing ideas, experiences and so on.

Now it's quieter than a library after closing time

So what gives? Is no-one doing it this year? Or are we all just very shy?

Re: Victoria 17 - C2, change proposals

So you don't plan to do the Watersides in it?! I take the point about it not really being a racer, but at the same time I have thought about this for one or two of my boats over the years, and I don't think there are any fundamental objections. Some thoughts 1. Pulled in, the outside of the hull wil...

Paddling Canadian we used to use a bailer, but that was one more thing to carry so we chucked it. Another 100g saved!!!

Re: dwrace 2013

Ah - dependent on anatomy and trouser configuration you might like to do what we do and go in the bottom of the boat and then tip out.

Although if you don't tell your support at Westminster they can make themselves and their car quite 'wet' when they turn the boat over...

ZRE carbon - power surge medium, with 12 degrees of crank are what we use

Why not bent shaft?

Re: Post DW; What next?

Not canoeing for a while if you're anything like us!!! Poole harbour is a fun 15 mile race in september marks the start of our season. We're also thinking stour descent. Ross Warland is normally a cold race, so therefore compulsory. Cheshire ring is tempting, but to be honest the big issue is the co...

Re: DW 2012

Kvin, you have good reason for all that pride! Is yours the best family performance (not sure if there's a trophy for that?) I for one could not do the 4 day. Once I've started I have to get there, or I'd never get back in the boat. BTK - ah, you beat us by 28 seconds, you monkeys!! And on that lead...

Re: DW 2012

Super. One more thing to look forward to at Easter then... (A colleague was cheerfully predicting snow, no fuel for the cars, east wind, no flow, low levels in the canal, maybe baking hot in the day and snow at night, and I don't know what else - maybe earthquakes) Exactly where does the damn thing ...

Re: DW 2012

It's strangely satisfying being one of those annoying C2's that you have to overtake again and again!
You are so right. A couple of years ago we did the same K2 14 times in a row. They overtook in the water, we overtook at the portage. It did not improve their mood...

Re: DW 2012

Unless you're a trained runner I think it's mad to jump out of a boat and deliberately raise your heart rate. The longer term impact on your paddling has to be detrimental. In 2008 we walked everything. In 2009 we ran round all the locks. The difference was an hour at Reading - our paddling speed w...

Re: DW 2012

Liz, Well, how good are we at running? Now there's a question. Probably average for a couple of guys in their 50s, we could run the whole thing, but it would be a real effort... We sprint hard but stamina is a question mark... We are quicker than most K2s at the portage though - C2s are quick in and...

Re: DW 2012

my successful DW K2 time for the trip to Newbury is 6hrs 54 Ours is 6:58 in 2009, so similar there, PB is 6:20, so not similar there! For your 6:05 - did you run all the locks at Crofton? We're thinking that we'll try this (for the first time in 4 years). It is a big effort though and no mistake...

Re: DW 2012

I really felt for you with those 8 seconds... We boiled a bit too - we were strong for the first third, weak in the middle and strong at the end. Very curious, and we missed our target (also 4 hours) by 6 minutes, so that's bad. But a personal best by 4 minutes, so that's good. Now 3 mins behind 4th...

Training last night - Sharpness canal.

A lovely clear moonlit night, speed good, water dead calm. A few inches of fog on the water.

Good pub half way for carb refreshment.

No washing machine effect. No shouting. Wonderful.

No cows! No gate!!!

But the full choppy washing machine experience at the lower part of the course.

Although - a personal best for us, so chuffed with that...

And a lovely sunny day too.
