Agree about Reed aquatherm -
Their not so bad as long as you don't do T-rescues with one on, that really eats them. Just tell your mate "sorry I'm not going to rescue you, I'm saving my deck."

Re: Vhf radio antenna

I once again, i advise people to check your radio. This this would never have worked when i may have needed it. Its a pain, but i'd now rather have it stored in a drybag in a hatch and retrieve it, install the antenna and i'll know it'll work. Do you not check your radios before setting off? Just g...

There not really made exclusively for sea kayaker, most people will be using them from the deck of a ship. There's no need to bend or twist the antenna, just leave it sticking out of the zip.

Re: Gear Organisation

After washing and drying my kit off I pack it all away in an IKEA holdall type bag so its all together and I just need to pull the Ikea bag out next trip. There is a trend to end up with loads of stuff I don't need this way, but it just gets left in the car. I have arrived at a cottage on Mull for a...

I just use os maps most of the time. I do have a GPS with all of the UK on it at 1:50,000 scale. When I brought it they were also selling UK marine charts on a SD card, they were very expensive.

Re: Kayaking wetsuit

Forth element thermocline, is a non neoprene alternative. So much more comfortable when out of the water, about as warm as a thin wetsuit in the water. Couples well with Reed salopettes and cag. Only problem is the price, it's not cheap.

Been using one for years, very comfortable and waterproof. The neck doesn't really seal but it doesn't need to. If you do swim in Reed kit it acts a bit like a wetsuit.

Re: RTM dag Midway maiden

Learn to live without the paddle leash, they always end up in a tangle. It caused at least one capsize in your video. Don't drag your kayak down the beach, float it before getting on. Learn to scull for support, lay your paddle blade on the surface of the water. Lift the leading edge up just a littl...

Re: PLB registration delay record?

As mentioned above, just washing the RescueMe PLB1 under the tap after use is not enough to keep it safely usable. You need to unwind/rewind the aerial regularly. If you don't the aerial can get extremely stiff to deploy, certainly too stiff if you were trying to deploy it with cold fingers. I now ...

Re: Best single person tent for sea kayaking?

Is this a tent for something special or just a tent for the odd weekend camping trip?
Why does it need to be free standing?
Why do you think you need a tent that costs the best part of £1000 for camping on the beach in the UK, or are you going further afield?

Re: How do you stow your pump?

Ok Thanks Chris. I will work on my rolling and staying upright and perhaps two manual pumps one in and one on deck might be a consideration. I think you're maybe over thinking this a bit. Work on your support strokes and roll, always useful. Get a pump keep it handy not stashed away in your kayak. ...

Re: How do you stow your pump?

The battery last for weeks when not actually pumping and about six hours when pumping constantly. Why does it have to pump continuously? How does the water get into the cockpit if there is a spray skirt on? No, it has enough power to run continuously for six hours, in theory at least. It doesn't ac...

Re: How do you stow your pump?

I have an electric pump behind the seat (Rule 500), it fires up every 20 seconds or so. If it feels resistance it keeps on pumping otherwise it switches off. The buzzing can be annoying on calm days so I don't tend to connect when it's very calm. The battery last for weeks when not actually pumping ...

Just in case anyone's interested. It's just that it not so much of a current that flows in one direction or other. It's better looked at a wave that flows around the country. When islands get in its way the wave can flow up different sides of the island at different rates. That's why you get some very funny tidal anomalies between i...

Thanks Mark, I had another dig on line today. So a lazer flares is a kind of pen light with an incredible powerful but very narrow beam. Lazer flares?

Having dumped all my very out of date pyrotechnics ages ago I've been wondering what to get to replace them. I see that the discussion in the almanac was way back in 2011 so is there anything better on the market now than this sort of thing. https://www.marinesuperstore.com/signalling/flares/odeo-mk...

Re: How to plan where to go (for wussy newbies)

Your general rule for the tides isn't very general, doesn't work on the North Sea Coast at all or the English Channel.

From the North Coast to the Wash it floods South and East. From the Channel to the Wash it floods East and North.

Whereabouts on the Clyde are you?

There's a wealth of good paddling to be done without travelling too far. Depending on prevailing conditions you can often find somewhere sheltered to paddle even when it's blowing a hoolie out in the Firth of Clyde.

The coastguard aren't interested in licensing issues as has already been stated that's ofcom's remit. Judging by the terrible RT procedures you hear all the time, you would have to make some really bad cock-up before anyone even noticed.
