Re: River Perth - New Zealand
Excellent place to go for a honeymoon! The Perth is the next valley from the Whateroa and one flows into the other. The West Coast is a breath taking spot in an already breath taking country. One word of warning, take bug spray, sand flies tend to be quite mean on that side of the mountains. An I3 w...

River Perth - New Zealand
I'm actually back in Wales looking at some very low and cold rivers over Christmas, however back at home in NZ the season is very much producing the goods. This is a short video from the river Perth on the West Coast. One of the more involved rivers I've done since moving over there, but one of the ...

Re: Kaituna Lower Gorges
Mark, Gnarly gorge is just as you described and is inbetween Awesome and Smokey. Most portage it (as we did that day) and yes it does contain a blind 30 footer and some awful lumps of wood as well as rapids that ramp up another grade to the above video. I'll pass on that!

Kaituna Lower Gorges
Any of you who have been over here in NZ might have paddled this. I finally got into the Kaituna lower gorges last weekend and it has some of the most incredible tight gorges combined with great white water:

Re: Some scary sumps but great white water in NZ
Jerry, as Mike said, that is the guidebook to NZ however there is a lot of stuff not in it. There is an online guide here: http://rivers.org.nz/nz PM me if you are coming out, I can give you a hand and point you in the right direction if you want. I'm based in Auckland, however I might be heading do...

Some scary sumps but great white water in NZ
Discovered some crazy geology on the Tarawera out here in NZ. Whole river sumps underground to emerge in the middle of an enormous cliff. Some great white water though.

The Motu was great, however I recommend doing it in summer with a tad more water. And take raft support to carry out the deer!

Kayak Hunting
Not sure how much it would be possible in the UK, but kayaking hunting has been surprisingly successful over here in NZ. I reckon some parts of Scotland it might be possible:

I've seen that done, it is a tighter line than it looks. Glad you enjoyed the river. Unfortunately there are no more releases until spring in November, but a lot of the rain fed runs are coming in at the moment.

Gwynfor,
We wimped out of that section with the flows we had, all concerned thought it might be a bit high and pretty isolated. I can't wait to try it at some reasonable levels.
Looks like I need to get a drone for some really good footage!

Corsica
As the snow melts and the Corsica season comes in, I found myself missing Europe for the first time since moving away. I found a load of footage from a few years ago and put together a video for people to get fired up for this years season.

I don't know how this has re-surfaced, but I asked the initial question way before I co-authored the Welsh Rivers, probably in research for it.

Nepal and the Thule Bheri
Nepal is a wonderful place, and its economy relies a lot on tourism. One of the best ways to help their economy following this dreadful earthquake is to go there. Here is a reason I keep on going back over and over again, I can't recommend it enough:

We get fleeced for Kokotat in the UK. I managed to get round it by getting the full spec Gore Tex one via Canada. This came to £550 rather than £1000! Have you looked at the cost of importing one of the suits ? once you look at the import tax and what not its very close to what they are charging us...

5.10 Grading system
I recently saw an paddlign article from the US about a grading system they were using, which is basically borrowed from the Yosemite Climbing grading system. Grade 1-4 is the same as we know it, but there has always been a wide band of what exaclty grade 5 is. In effect if grade 6 is 'unavigable' th...

Re: Low water Nepal
Joe,
You have to do the Humla. Lower water the better. Here is our video from last year, although levels were a bit high in this:
I'm heading to the Thule Bheri in March, which is supposed to be good for low levels.
