Re: VHF handheld ans scan-function, allowed in the UK?

There's no pr...

Re: Loch Maree access
There's a lot of history behind this. There are valid concerns about disturbance of breeding black-throated divers on the loch and potential threats to the woodlands on the islands if people camp there, but the owners of the loch and adjoining land play on this to restrict access. You have a right ...

Re: The Spey in December
If it rains it will be wet. If it snows it will be rocky. If it snows then thaws it will be cold and wet. Whatever the conditions it will be boring.

River Runie - Strathcanaird
Has anyone out there run this little river north of Ullapool? The last mile or so down to its confluence with the River Canaird looks potentially entertaining. It has a series of small drops (one of them badly obstructed by a boulder and possibly not runnable) separated by flat water then a more con...

Upper Findhorn - Levens Gorge hazard
There is a large branch caught in the undercut, river right, just below the twisting drop at the entrance to the Levens gorge. It will be completely submerged at high water levels but could be a nasty surprise for anyone who takes a swim there.

Re: Some more rivers
I saw the Bran rapid a couple of years ago in full spate with the river pouring over the full width of the weir at the top. Grade 5+ I reckoned - just one long ramp of white with an occasional exploding haystack - so I ran away. I went back last year to see if it might be a bit friendlier at lower l...

Re: Levels in May
If it rains a lot the rivers will be high. If it doesn't rain a lot, they won't. The rest is in the hands of the weather gods. Fort William has two good things going for it: a) it usually rains some of the time in May (and sometimes it rains all of the time in May) b) if it doesn't rain, there are s...
