next step in when to go boating?

So first we had river levels on the internet, now we have forecasts on the internet. Only in beta currently and hand full of sites - a few listed below but there is a few more. It is beta so No guarantee of anything staying up or working but its likely at some point in the future the whole of the en...

Re: EA Gauge Changes

the raw river level data as open data I believe is one of many data sets that was promised as open data last year. The EA are looking at many other data sets to become open data that I think might have some benefit to paddlers but I suspect the 3rd party IPR issues will take a bit of time to resolve...

Countryfile, spotted: paddlers on the Dee

Anyone else spot the paddlers on county file this week hiding in plain site in the background? I know I did, had to wind it back when mrs cave said she was seeing paddlers. Im loosing my touch I used to be able to spot a boat at a 1000 paces. In case you missed it about 6 minutes in, in the arty bit...

Re: River Levels - Useful Tool

Upstream gauges are more useful as they tell you what's coming rather than what's already happened - the closer to the section the gauge is, the more accurate the current level will be. There are more rivers on the gaugemap e.g. West Lyn at Barbrook Bridge doesn't appear on EA map (although it does...

Re: River gauge map

EA seem to have a lot more bandwidth to spare than SEPA. Most likely nothing to to with EA having more bandwidth, just density of network and infrastructure. Lots of gauges are battery powered out in the middle of nowhere so updates are limited by how long a battery lasts and how often you can get ...

Having a look here might help make up your mind: http://apps.environment-agency.gov.uk/river-and-sea-levels/136492.aspx Admitedly im not looking at it from boating persepctive, but there is still a bit of water in the thames including the upper sections and likely to be some for a while longer espec...

As it often comes up in conversation in UKRGB that we need to keep records of accidents in water sports on the pretext of so we can learn (in my opinion/experience often said by others not associated with an accident). Any way some people already keep some details of those that were unfortunate enou...

Re: What car for a paddling vehicle?

With your criteria you are looking at an medium (ish) estate. I guess it comes down to how big your playboats are and how often you will have then in the car vs other driving. If you are mostly commuting then get a car idea for that and just accept the boats on the roof and lower mpg when going padd...

I was in Morocco last year boating. Only went out for a long weekend but still got a 2 solid days boating in. A little level dependant but no different to any where else. I miss my riot booster 60 in purple first boat i ever brought brand new and was a dream to paddle, so much fun on a wave and comfortable. I also miss the blue booster 60 i bought to replace it when the first one broke. I was gutted when the blue one then got trashed helping someone on a river. But t...

Also the last time I paddled this year. Back in April I went out to Morocco with 4 friends and my girlfriend and did my first multi day trip. I also got engaged in the middle of atlas mountains after an "interesting" day on the water. You know it was interesting when it starts off with a goats head ...

Re: Locking up kayaks

Alex I would suggest just sticking it in the club sheds if your garage isnt secure. But if you do want to keep it in your garage then you'll need an anchor bolt of some description either attached to the existing bolts or stuck in the floor/wall and a dirty great big cable. I wouldnt bother about st...

Re: kayaks on planes - do we need bags on them ?

Not so sure about flying to Uganda no idea if your airline has any specific requirements but a few of us flew to Morocco recently and we all had boats packed differently and none of us had any bother at all. More about how the boats were packed here: http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/forum/viewtopi...

Re: How to pack for flying with kayaks?

Just to update on this one. 6 of us flew out of Gatwick last week on easyjet and each pair had their boats packed differently. 1 pair of boats were just empty shells with paddles stuck in a paddle bag pushed in to the foot well and taped in with some foam underneath the paddles that stick up a littl...

Nothing useful for europe but if you dont mind changing your plans slightly water levels are supposed to be good in Morocco (well its only just past Spain) at the moment. I say supposed only heard it third hand, but I'll know more at the end of the week when im out there.
