Re: Long weekend in Norway

Would guess if you want to spent a minimum of time, you want to be rather sure (in some way) the whether allows you to paddle... The coast of Norway has then some challenges.... Stockholm would be an option for sure. Nice area, no fjords or tide waves however., lot of islands to camp on. Good luck! JB

Re: How much buoyancy do you need?

Something to bear in mind when you start thinking about life jackets is where as a 50N buoyancy aid has you pulling down against BA with 5kg of force with a 150N jacket if it increased to 15kg. That sort of force could easily be enough to have the life jacket ride up making it very difficult to do ...

As alternative you can take the ferry helsingbor-helsingor, no bridge but short brake.... JB I think I have a pretty good idea of the transportation options in my home country. Allan, I am pretty sure you have a good idea of the possibilities in your area. But my comment was meant for the TS. ;) JB

Operators licence or not, the coastguard would never ignore a mayday call under any circumstances.

Re: Lofoten - the drive

On the way back we used the Bridge of Doom from Sweden to Copenhagen. So called because of how it feels when you're two hundred feet up in the sky for miles, in a gale, with 2 large canoes on the roof of the van, and the drivers knuckles turning white as he gripped the wheel to counteract the gusts...

I always carry (composite) paddles in the car.
Not sure if my concern is realistic or just paranoia but I don't like the idea of the blades vibrating in the wind and working the glue loose.
+1
First clean them, remove salt residue, than in the car/van.

Grian, a word of caution, rolling is a particularly good way to get surfer's nodules in your ears Douglas Douglas, with "Surfers Nodules", does this in general not refer to nodules on the skin of the legs of a surfer caused by repeated contact of the skin with the surfboard? I was referring to paddling a bearing using deck compasses, not hand bearing compasses. The idea of trying to take and plot an accurate position from a sea kayak does make me smile though.... We all rely on forecasts to plan our sea kayaking trips. Although generally accurate and reliable, I am quite often surprised by the expectation and reality of forecasts and sea conditions- be that calmer or rougher than expected. I know local conditions can vary from forecasts as most forecasts lo...

First try a "half roll"meaning coming up on the side you went down/ not going full under-through the kayak.
See what makes the difference between the 2 kayaks.
