Re: VHF licence fee

And what happens if you operate a VHF in distress without a license? Will channel 16 be blocked, the RNLI will not respond...?

But GBP 60,- for a lifetime license, its cheaper and more useful then flares....;)

I always carry (composite) paddles in the car.
Not sure if my concern is realistic or just paranoia but I don't like the idea of the blades vibrating in the wind and working the glue loose.
+1
First clean them, remove salt residue, than in the car/van.

Grian, a word of caution, rolling is a particularly good way to get surfer's nodules in your ears Douglas Douglas, with "Surfers Nodules", does this in general not refer to nodules on the skin of the legs of a surfer caused by repeated contact of the skin with the surfboard? I think general planning and understanding the likely effect of tidal streams is important, but so is not relying on the predictions. Too much accuracy can be misleading. I was referring to paddling a bearing using deck compasses, not hand bearing compasses. The idea of trying to take and plot an accurate position from a sea kayak does make me smile though.... Agree with what you say. Every-time I see a (experienced) seakayakers preparing the course with an academic...

We all rely on forecasts to plan our sea kayaking trips. Although generally accurate and reliable, I am quite often surprised by the expectation and reality of forecasts and sea conditions- be that calmer or rougher than expected. I know local conditions can vary from forecasts as most forecasts lo...

First try a "half roll"meaning coming up on the side you went down/ not going full under-through the kayak.
See what makes the difference between the 2 kayaks.

Interesting, and I second the request to let us see the results. I do go sea kayaking, and i don't think it's high risk - I e...

Re: VHF handheld ans scan-function, allowed in the UK?

Why would you want to scan? I wouldn't just scan all channels, but I use a selective scan to monitor chosen ship to ship channels, the local VTS, the coastguard working channel and Ch16. Is dual watch allowed in the Netherlands? No, just as try-watch. And indeed, you just add the preferred channels...

Re: VHF handheld ans scan-function, allowed in the UK?

I suspect the reason it is illegal in NL may be some "catch all" legislation on scanners as a whole. There is actually legislation aimed at a similar purpose in the UK as well, but it goes about it a different way, regulating what you can listen to rather than how you find it. It's illegal to liste...

Re: VHF handheld ans scan-function, allowed in the UK?

Hi JB, this makes absolutely no sense to me.... The purpose of Channel 16 is a Calling and Distress channel - vessels call on 16 and then shift to a working channel as a routine procedure. I work on vessels visiting Netherlands ports regularly - there is no restriction on use of #16 as a calling ch...

Re: VHF handheld ans scan-function, allowed in the UK?

it is odd, from a kayakers perspective.
Reason it is, while scanning, you might want to make a call and do it just when Channel 16 is on. This would disturb the radio-traffic/communication.

Hi Guys
Just a question, is in the UK allowed to have the scan function on the VHF handheld enabled?
As in the Netherlands this is not allowed.
