Re: Scorpio HV or MV

If it’s roominess that counts, then you might consider a composite Northshore Atlantic. I’m 6ft2, nearly 15 stone and have size 13 feet, and I’m comfortable in mine. The one drawback for me is cockpit length - I struggle to get my knees out easily. But that may be down to body proportions rather tha...

Re: close encounter with a humpback whale

I watched the BBC’s programme and thought it stunning. Photography was terrific and so, too, were the interviews with the quirky and likeable experts who shared their knowledge of whales, knowledge often gleaned from new technology such as drones. The saddest part was seeing whales casually killed ...

Re: Plan B

Excellent report, Allan - many thanks I saw it on Fbk earlier, shared it, but decided that wasn’t enough and, having been warned, I had no excuse for paddling without a PLB. This one has a seven-year battery life which sold it to me. I’m expecting delivery this morning. https://www.force4.co.uk/ocea...

Re: Sweet Protection drysuits

Thanks for the info, PlymouthDamo - that’s helpful. System X told me they could only service Kokatat and not Sweet suits because the technology is different. Now that sounds as though it might have been bullshit. And Mr Ed, it sounds as though you and I were thinking along similar lines. If Hammond ...

Re: Sweet Protection drysuits

Thanks all for suggestions. The choice has not been easy. I’ve felt like the owner of a new car who can only get it serviced by the garage up the local side street. Far better had Sweet Protection got its act together and organised some UK customer services. Instead, their head office recommended Re...

Sweet Protection drysuits

Has anyone had theirs serviced? My Sweet Intergalactic suit needs pressure testing and patching, but I’m struggling to find someone to do the work. Up and Under who sold it to me can’t help and nor will System X who tell me they only do Kokatat; apparently, they lack the technology to service Sweet ...

Aquapac - Customer service

Another company that takes the trouble to keep customers happy.

I punctured the Aquapac case I use for my Vhf so I appealed to the company for help. The result? They sent me some patches which arrived next day.

They work a treat and there was no charge.

Brilliant!

Re: north norfolk easy sea kayak venue for 21st / 22nd Oct

I’ve paddled in that area and reckon Burnham Staithe is a good place to launch; access and parking are easy and there are no charges. You’re unlikely to encounter much in the way of swell or tidal flow so conditions will generally be benign (though I suspect next weekend will be close to springs). B...

Re: Tall and advice needed!

Another factor to consider is cockpit length.

Ideally, you want to be able to get your legs out of the boat without having to perch on the back deck or lean right back (as I have to when exiting my Atlantic).

My next boat will be one with a longer cockpit.

Re: Tall and advice needed!

I’m 6ft2 and find many boats impossibly small. But I am the owner of a Northshore Atlantic and not only is it comfortable, it would probably fit a bigger paddler. If it’s a fibreglass boat you want, then the Atlantic is one of the less expensive ones. The plastic version is likely to be cheaper stil...

Re: Tendinitis - advice?

A six-step recovery plan - that should keep me busy well into 2018. Very many thanks for your kindness, Douglas. And thanks, too, for that strap recommendation, dc9mm. The physio recommended something similar and I tried it for a month or so, but it didn’t seem to make any difference. There isn’t an...

Re: Tendinitis - advice?

Wow! What great feedback - thanks to one and all. Replies seem to agree on one point - that my injuries are likely to be a symptom of a broader problem. In my case, I suspect that’s to do with posture and a weak core - things I must work on. And once I’m back in a boat I’ll also get someone to have ...

Tendinitis - advice?

Early in September I tried paddling round the Isle of Wight but our trip plan was too ambitious and I’m left with two painful elbows. Since then a physio has given me excercises which seem to make no difference, and a GP-friend suggested rest is the only cure. I’d love to get back in my boat but at ...

Re: British Kayak manufacturers and customer service

A big thumbs-up for Mike Nelson of North Shore. After I had convinced myself my Atlantic had developed a hidden leak he thoroughly checked it over. He didn’t succeed in finding any mystery puncture but was too kind to tell me to be more careful putting my spray deck on properly. He did, however, not...

That’s good to know, Rowland. I had condensation in my TG4 and had meant to chase up either Olympus or John Lewis but delayed doing so, thinking it was too much hassle. Don’t have any recommendation for you but I’d be surprised if a good case doesn’t exist. At the Brittany festival an Italian paddler was using a chart on his iPad to navigate. I was sceptical but at the end of the week he still had his iPad on his deck. He was confident that everything was completel...

Re: Tent with a big porch?

No Phil, I wasn't suggesting using a tarp instead of a tent - though in some places and some climates that might work. And I don't see how a really generously sized porch with no bug net could help with midges.

I'll be interested to hear to what you choose.

Good luck

Have you considered a tarp?

They're versatile, don't take up a lot of space and offer much more room than the porch of a tent.

Not heard of label printers before.

Wonder if that's something I'd find in a local printshop. If not, then it seem a silver indelible marker is my best option..
