Re: Access and facility charging at Canolfan Tryweryn
Apparently it seems that CW contribute an extra subsidy on behalf of its members for the CT site that BC has refused to do for its members (despite its rather bloated funding pool), hence the price difference. Hang on, I'm not saying any of this is right, BUT... There is a difference between NGBs r...

Re: River Dee low level environmental concerns?
Given the power that local angling concerns seem to have, if there was any chance of damaging salmon redds they would have been making a fuss about it for years and would almost certainly have reported paddlers to the police if there was any kind of case to prosecute. I have a vague feeling there mi...

Re: Ship arrival and departure times.
Just a wee reminder... There is no longer a legal requirement to monitor VHF CH16 so be aware that the big rib coming towards you might not know you are there. Has there been a second change or is there still confusion over the original change? HM Coastguard are no longer required to maintain a 24 ...

Re: Access and facility charging at Canolfan Tryweryn
On this different fees for other bodies subject, yes, it's wrong. CW should be charging a BC/CW price and a Non BC/CW price. BC do not charge CW members any more than BC members at HPP. I'd be minded to start charging CW members more at HPP until CW reduce their fees to BC Members. BC have nothing ...

Re: Eckla 260
260 is the diameter of the wheels in mm, if you have 170mm round hatches, No. If you have an oval hatch, almost certainly yes. The frame will take up a lot of space due to its awkward shape, so even if it goes in it is unlikely to be practical with camping kit.

Re: Access and facility charging at Canolfan Tryweryn
If it is still run by CW (and not an independant commercial operation), I suspect the different charges for CW and BC members may be contrary to the federalisation agreement, although non-one actually seems to know exactly what that agreement includes (me included).

Re: Peak UK ends partnership with British Canoeing.
I would think the problem is more likely to be that BC are selling direct and cutting out independant retailers, I don't know because i've never looked at buying any BC kit. It also looks as though there is also an IP issue, presumably around designs that PeakUK hold the IP for. I'll continue to buy...

If I did want to get a proper shiny finish again, after filling in a gouge on the otherwise pretty deck say - how best to go about that? What kind of polish, what kind of mop/pad/etc.? (And what kind of machine - is a mop in a drill good enough to get a decent result?) No real right or wrong, I hav...

Never used one, but I would give Geoff at Karitek/Teal Engineering a call, he designs and installs the products himself and is probably the best person to be able to come up with a solution

Would you rather they didn't repair the bridge leading to it's closure and eventual collapse into the play wave? If you can change discreetly there are other places to park with easier access to the water, but a longer paddle to and from the wave. I hate carrying boats, I've used a few different spo...

Re: First time in the US
Wow, what a wide open question. First thing is whilst we tend to call all paddlesport canoeing in the UK, in the US they are more apt to differentiate between canoeing (open canoe, single paddle) and kayaking (closed boat double paddle, or sit on top with double paddle). I'm not aware of canoeing be...

Re: NDK explorer refurb advice
I don't think the PO has sanded through the gel coat, definitely not on the seam tape. All they have done is keyed the gel surface and painted resin over (there may be some glass tape or something - it goes pretty clear when wet out). So yeah adding more resin might make it look more even, but it is...

Re: NDK explorer refurb advice
Looks to be in pretty good condition overall. Star cracking of gel coat is not unusual, but as you have noted you have transverse cracking adjacent to bulkheads - there could very well be stress cracks through the laminate in these areas. You could try part filling with water and trying to flex the ...

Thanks, Jim. I think you have sold me on just applying Flow coat with a foam brush as I can't see any advantage to spraying if the product doesn't flow. I have a HVLP system as well as air, but as you have alluded to, it would be more trouble than it's worth. I have experience of cutting back to a ...

Are you just going to use it for sea kayaking. I was on the point of buying a Ocean wrap but there happened to be a fellow club member in the shop. He pointed out that sea buoyancy aid’s possibly have less buoyancy so I got a river wrap as I do both sea and ww the reason is that air filled water do...

Re: NDK explorer refurb advice
Nothing you apply in a repair is going to be as hard wearing as the original gel coat, but as long as you accept that limitation, there are 3 basic routes. Paint- probably some kind of 2-pack intended for 'fibreglass' possibly using an etch primer first. It will scratch off, but probably just scratc...

We do 200m sprint efforts in training, I can do 12kph for about 150m of it :) Actually, that's not true, I have been down to 56 or 57 seconds which is faster than 12kph over the 200, right now Im going over 60 for 200 but more usually I'm collapsing around 150. It's going to really hurt when I next ...

I can never quite sustain 10kph for more than a couple of minutes (WWR), but can usually maintain well over 9 on a 2.7km out and back when feeling in top condition. Any automotive cutting product will work on 'fibreglass' by which of course we all mean the polyester gel coat, not the actual fibres, or the back side of the laminate. Conversely the finer grades of marine compounds can be used for restoring automotive paintwork, but beware, the coarser grades will...

Re: Additional Buoyancy For Pyranha fusion 2
Any decent buoyancy bags (the normal solutuion) will have eyelets for tying them in, you just need to work out what to tie them too, maybe drill a hole through the furthest away peg, or if they are on a bolted rail, slacken the furthest bolt and slip a piece of cord behind the rail. Obviously if you...

Re: Is it worth getting a BA with a chest harness?
I would chat to the people you are paddling with and find out what their views/requirements are - opinions differ widely and it is probably more important to gel with your peers than to have or not have a chest harness. I assume Lee Valley don't need you to wear one, maybe even require you not to we...

Re: P&H which composite to choose
Kevlar/Diolen seems an odd combination to me, Diolen is normally substituted for Kevlar for a more affordable laminate. In which case, expect Kelvar/Diolen to have high tensile strength, but be a bit on the flexible side, whilst Carbon/Kevlar will be a bit stiffer and have similar tensile strength (...

So you have taken the time to build a custom paddle with a shaft size entirely different to the vast majority of commercially built paddles, and you have an issue with not being able to find pogies to fit it? Why not self craft some pogies? Buy some waterproofed fabric, bonded polyester thread and s...

Nope, I use Peak UK decks, but not that type so haven't seen that problem. Main problem I see cockpit rims cutting through where people don't replace the tape on composite rims when it falls off, but thats not a deck issue, and not relevant for PE boats. They are usually quite helpful if you have pr...
