Re: Angling Trust & British Canoeing in Court Soon?
This raised it's head a few years ago. My memory was that the club only own the rights below the bridge and not above. The landowner on river right downstream once had a very nice conversation with me about how we should get on and enjoy it and ignore the fishermen! The ROW in question passes next t...

It does appear to be from an EA member of staff.
Look at the East Lynn guide and the last post is from Pete Thorn saying that the EA have told him something similar.

I did it with a few others a few years back and have also mentioned it in guides. I'm sure plenty of others have run it.

Re: Lost Ainsworth C100 canoe paddle Tees Abbey Rapids
I don't know if this is the same one, but I spotted a black canoe paddle on the bank river left a couple of hundred metres upstream of Whorlton bridge yesterday (01/01/15). It was on a footpath next to the river near a stone bench. I'm afraid we couldn't stop to recover it as were in kayaks and head...

Jim, You need to go and have a good look when the water level is low, take plenty of pictures and report back on here on what you saw and post the pictures for all to see giving us your considered opinion as a seasoned paddler of the Tees. Peter At the moment family demands mean I hardly get any ti...

Re: Low Force Rock
Ok, so the latest I've heard is that this isn't just rumours but it does sound like something has indeed changed and now there's a high risk of pitoning on a rock. Someone broke an ankle doing just this on the Tyne tour weekend.

Did you have any landowner issues? I seem to remember this being "Beck A" described by Matt here.

Re: Low Force Rock
I think it always has done, which is the reason it used to get referred to as a "grade 5 line" (which it isn't). The only broken leg I heard about was about ten years ago, but I think this was more a case of someone having only partially exited their boat in the pool above then getting swe...

Re: Paddling in the North East
Some stuff on future Kielder releases can be found here. Personally I'd sooner do a low section of the Tees than any level on the (virtually all flat) North Tyne, but horses for courses. The best bit of the South Tyne is above Garrigill and gets up to 4, but hard to catch with enough water. If you g...

Re: Paddling in the North East
Your best bet would be to head for the Tees. Multiple sections at all grades which go at very low to very high levels. You're also then within easy travelling distance to the Swale, Wear and South Tyne catchments if the water turns up, with the Wharfe, North Tyne or Rawthey/Clough systems not too fa...

Re: Paddling the River Eden (lakes)
Some of the 'closed days' in the old restriction 'agreement' stemmed from the fact that shooting is very popular on this stretch. Not just shot guns, but rifles... and they shoot across the river from one bank to the other stalking. If they are shooting deer then there might be bullets wizzing abou...

The extent of the public footpaths is shown on the available maps: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=388500&y=528500&z=120&sv=high+force&st=3&tl=Map+of+High+Force,+Durham+[Water+Feature]&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf I think I am right in saying that, if you head from ...

Re: Charging for paddling High-Low, River Tees
People are confusing "access" as being "floating on the river" versus "having to walk across someone's land to get to the river". I guess you could use a helicopter to avoid having to walk across someone's land..... Nope, it's all public footpaths to, along and from th...

Re: Gauges for Troutbeck and Rothay
Sneaky - it's on the text navigation, but not the map! Calibrate away and we'll stick it on! The EA have been fairly responsive to me. They got the Yorkshire Moors Esk gauge online when I asked and fixed the Swale one fairly quickly when it broke a little while ago. Always worth trying them if there...

Re: RIVER SPRINT (Near S Bends to River Kent Confluence)
Ran the Sprint on 0.65 (medium) on 18/10/14. Excellent levels with no major tree blockages from Cocks Close downwards. The 'warm-up' from the Public Toilets was a horrible tree-infested ditch, loads of pin potential and wouldn't recommend it at any level. Have a look and get in further down towards...

Ah, the Troutbeck one isn't an EA gauge, which makes things more tricky. We already have a Rothay one on Rainchasers at Miller Bridge House, not sure where the Brathay Hall info comes from?

Ok, changed it. Let me know if these give a better approximation. I also noted that the put-in is showing at the wrong quarry, must have been a slip of the mouse when the guide was created. Unfortunately, it's not letting me update that, so I'll have to see if Rob can fix it.

I stuck a reply to your comment Andy - would it be best to just add 0.35m onto all rainchasers calibrations until better ones are known? I can change that now to prevent any more wasted journeys?

Re: Getting Comfortable
It's probably more to do with the padding around your hips cutting off your circulation to your legs and feet - have you tried fiddling with this? I seem to remember the main issue I had with an old club 3D padding was whichever bright spark put a large block of padding between one's legs. Whatever ...

Is anyone aware of an agreement that works well and is flexible enough for both parties to be happy? Keswick Greta works. 365 days access, but above a defined water level for two months during the spawning season. Emails that have been sent out to the Committee of Lancaster Canoe Club. First incide...

Were did you get those quotes from Anthony? I thought the Halton Rapids bit was one where CE still wants to use restrictive dates as part of the arrangement (1st Nov - 15th Mar), see here . Could the miffed fisher-person have been under the impression that the paddlers were using the river outside o...

Angling Trust - More Saber rattling, or serious this time?
I noticed an article in the Times linked from the bbc website about the Angling Trust about to take legal action against the BCU/CE and CW. Looking at their website it seems they may not just be saber rattling this time. Thoughts? Following a steady increase in complaints of canoe trespass incidents...

Re: tees greta - access
Isn't there an access point a bit further upstream just outside Bowes? Is there any reason why this isn't being used more often/as the normal get in? It adds about 5km of fairly flat water with one dodgy weir, so most people don't bother, but you can access directly from the footpath to the river t...

Re: RIVER GRETA (Rutherford to the Tees confluence)
Ran it again today and footbridge has gone! No evidence of it downstream, so guess the landowner has removed it. On another topic, the parking at Rutherford bridge may be an issue as someone was leaving notes on paddlers cars. There were three big groups on the river today which didn't help, but I'd...
