Re: Skerries Tidal Scheme Array approved

Short video of it here, not me: http://youtu.be/1v06y_fIkeE?t=1m34s

Dropped right in behind it once at full flood (momentarally seemed like a fun idea..) and had a hard time getting away from the thing while staying upright, weird experience in a sea kayak.

Re: Removing old outside seam^

As with Nick just gelcoat on the seam of the AA when I got it, no tape. It leaked a lot as there were holes all the way along the join through to the inside tape before I filled them in. I've done a couple of tests now that have cleaner edges than my new kayak but dare say that'll not work out the s...

Re: Removing old outside seam^

Yeah, I'd just about gotten used to working with polyester gelcoat so maybe shouldn't have been so keen to use something else I've not used much before for the sake of it just because I had it as it's spoiled the finish. The boat is still a proper state elsewhere so a messy seam on one side is quite...

Re: Removing old outside seam^

Used kevlar tape as it was the only tape I could find 15mm wide with epoxy and same for the topcoat with pigment so a good bit more runny. As said the test patch I did with a lot more filler looks spot on, should have done one first!

Re: Removing old outside seam^

Thanks mike, I left the tape a while which allowed some bits to soak under although most of the mess was down to movement after the tape was removed, remembered after I posted that I made a test patch on a bit of wood with a lot more filler after I'd finished and it looks perfect. So more filler, be...

Re: Removing old outside seam^

Getting there slowly, the boat has been renamed Starcrack in honour of the number of them it has, many repaired but I'm kind of sick of them, theres certainally a point where its just not worth it and the boat was well past that it seems! The seam removal went okay, lot of patching due to my harsh c...

Nice pictures. Two photos from a paddle to Staffa last year with a nice mix of swell, wind and rain. Took a fair while to emerge from the murk on the day: http://www.johngrant.eu/kayak/d/3644-1/Mull+and+More+-+Day+4+Clachandu+to+Ulva_+Little+Colonsay_+Staffa+to+Gometra+06.jpg http://www.johngrant.eu...

Re: Removing old outside seam^

Hi Jim, Thanks for giving advice. There is a lot of flex compared to my other kayak thats got next to none. Pushing hard with a thumb causes the other side of the bottom to flex in a little too and noticed a small crack opening and closing on the far side of the keel strip while doing this, not one ...

Re: Flasks

The Stanley 1 litre flask is the most efficient I've found, does a very good job of keeping hot. That is, until it fails - with no sign of damage, it just stops working. Yes, ther's a no hassle, friendly and rapid replacement, they even reimbursed my postage in sending th dead one back, but I'm now...

Re: Removing old outside seam

Hi Jim, pictures of the bad bit infront of the seat were broken but fixed them now. I'm guessing it is going to have to be an interior reinforcement, just a bit unsure about the outside fix. Should have said the keel strip sticky stuff was there when i bought it and not part of my fixing. Although I...

Re: Removing old outside seam

Seems the more you start on these things the more work you find, treating it as a learning platform now where mistakes don't really matter, not entirely sure I'm going to have it on the water this side of Christmas though. Having patched up my overzelous chisel hits away which hadnt really appreciat...

Re: Relief on t'sea: PoorPlanningProducesPissPoorPerformance

You get your mates to raft up, you get out, straddle back of one kayak for a number one or two for a two, and do it. Your mates will pretend they are not watching but when you get back you find they were taking photos the whole time..

And no I've not done a two nor want to ;)

Re: Removing old outside seam

Chisel to take away the bulk followed by sandpaper did the trick and happy enough with the result, did take a couple of chips of white coat out from under the black seam so if after doing a perfect job sandpaper might be best bet but the kayaks pretty battered anyway in this instance. I had the grin...

Used one in very rough water the other week and had to cut off talking sharpish a couple of times to put both hands on the paddle and focus on staying upright, at these points i was holding the radio in the easiest place to access quickly, my mouth, the antenna has teeth marks in it now... Thanks, will have a crack at it with chisel, dremel and sandpaper seeing as there's not a magical no effort removal technique :)

First in a list of many things needing sorted on it!

Removing old outside seam^

Hi, I've got an old Anas Acuta that is pretty much cracked front to back along the seam both sides but for the cockpit and leaks like a leaky thing all over, in places the seam is totally gone and has damage to the deck/hull (like it had a run in with a grinder already) and for the rest but the cock...

Re: Go Pro all fogged up!

If the inserts are just desiccant paper/card cut to shape it would be a lot cheaper just ordering some A4 sheets of the stuff and cutting your own and even if its not the same it might be a decent alternative to filling the case with dust :) Edit to add link: http://www.aquapac.de/silicagel/Produkte...

Hi Chris, Thanks for that not sure how it was done, but I guess it is clear resin. Keel Strip Repair Query

I've a patch on a keel strip where the gelcoat must not have cured as after the first use the gelcoat was gone and the hardened resin and tape are showing through, image below. Is it just a case of adding a layer of gelcoat over this and would it stay put ok? If not any ideas? http://www.johngrant.e...

Re: Ethics in sea kayaking.

Oh, why not. I think I'll stick my head above the parapet. I believe that using the Coast Guard as a crutch is unethical, i.e., choosing to go out in wild conditions knowing you can always get rescued. This can shave days off any record-breaking attempt or give you bragging rights on a forum. It's ...

Second the JCB toughphone, not too expensive and can live in the BA without a bag. Basic phone with good battery life that does the trick. I use it with a geo sim so it will jump on any available network, handy when your in the bad signal places you end up whilst kayaking. Dirt cheap job in a bag is...

Glad to hear they are ok, from that article I ended up on the RNLI web site watching their shout videos as I hadn't realised they had a video section of rescues: http://www.rnli.org.uk/who_we_are/press ... ng=Rescues, these guys are awesome!
