Re: Tiderace Moving Bulkhead ?

... or if its attached with resin and that black stuff is just to neaten the finish ? Hi, yes, it can be done. As you state above, the black Sikaflex is a finishing piece - the bulkhead is glued in underneath, then glassed in from behind, then tidied up with the black stuff on the cockpit side. The...

Re: Tiderace Xceed - anyone know anything about it?

Hi Ed, Layups haven't been finalised yet - I'm expecting finished samples of Pace and Xtra from NELO soon. The weights at the various manufacturing stages look very promising. Gelcoats will be epoxy compatible polyester (i.e. easily repairable) all layups will be in epoxy resin, all vacuum bagged, h...

"What is the design idea behind this kayak Aled?" I'm not sure if you want to hear all this, you may prefer a simple straight answer, but I fancy a bit of a ramble, please indulge me... I've only ever had a design 'killed off' once before, that happened when the Xtra replaced the Xtreme. All my othe...

Re: Replace footplate with footpegs...?

Yes, this is certainly doable. The BigHead fasteners that are glued to the inside of the cockpit can be removed with no ill effects. Grind/sand away as much of the protruding structural adhesive (dark blue/green stuff, probably) until as much as possible/all of the stainless base is revealed, then g...

Re: Baidarka Explorer - Worth keeping?

I'm sure there are many Baidarka fans out there, and they'll sing its merits, but why stick with a boat that makes life hard and slows down your development as a paddler? Ballasting heavily is a workaround, and its a hassle and a compromise. Change it for a boat that fits your size and weight, and f...

For a skeg boat, place the CLA between 6cm and 8cm behind the LCB, making sure that Design and Target Displacements are close to equal

I'm not familiar with this boat in particular, but as a principle, boats that are designed to have rudders generally need to have their rudders active most of the time.

Re: Tiderace Xplore Classic, replacing the cable hose for the skeg cable?

Yes the SG5000-06 is the stuff I've been using lately. The 25ml syringes are a particularly useful size. You can purchase the mixing nozzle to make life easier (they're a single-use accessory, but make life easier if you want to inject accurately), otherwise hand mix by stirring and apply with a sui...

Re: Skeg problems and replacement - P&H Capella (pre 2004)

It appears that the skeg blade you have in the picture is a KajakSport Retractable Skeg with centre wire http://www.kajaksport.fi/products/skeg/ks-retractable-plastic-skeg-centre-wire-o-3mm25m (not the 'end wire' version) The wire and skeg come as a single unit when bought. Some here have experiment...

Re: Gelcoat repair - explained

The acetate sheet method is a shortcut technique to reduce/avoid the sanding and finishing. Pressing the sheet over/onto the newly applied gelcoat will effectively create a temporary mould surface for the outer skin. It will squeeze the gelcoat flat and leave a shiny finish, which, if you're not too...

Re: Tiderace Xplore M vs L for a big guy

Both boats will handle the weight. The L will have more freeboard at 139kg (95 + 20 + 24boat) therefore retaining a little more stability when edged over. The L has 23l more overall volume, although some of this will be above the knees. Add another 40kg to either and they'll both sink another inch l...

Re: Kayak Volume

I'm speculating here but maybe it was made smaller at some point to increase room under the front deck and the stats not updated? Sounds right, the original larger tray was reduced in both height and length to create more shin clearance and foot room. The original could take flares, but the early m...

Grade 3, no surgery, 15 years ago. My collarbone is still unstable and the AC joint is getting more arthritic as the years go by. It doesn't stop me from paddling, but an hour flat out with wings will leave me very sore and it'll last for a good few days. I hope your surgery settles it all into plac...

Re: Tiderace Xplore Classic, replacing the cable hose for the skeg cable?

I've not looked at this sub-forum for a long while, so please forgive the lateness of my response... The skeg you have in your boat is a proprietary design from Charger Composites (CC), Finland. It was the in-house system they fitted to all kayaks built by them at this time. The hulls were laid with...

The Xplore has a 50mm longer waterline than the Xcape The Xplore is approx 15% less stable than the Xcape The Xplore is 12mm narrower at the waterline beam than the Xcape Both are equal in terms of forward speed / efficiency / resistance The Xplore will react quicker to edging/turning than the Xcape...

In an effort to avoid equations, smoke, mirrors and snake oil, here's something I do regularly to gain further insight into boat handling and performance: Paddling similar boats, get a friend to paddle vigorously around some yachts, buoys and posts. Follow them one boat length behind, match their sp...

Re: Edging the opposite way when turning in a sea kayak!

Here's another version of the same thing... When the boat runs forward, and is upright, it makes an ellipse or lens (biconvex) like shape in the water, i.e. symmetrical, and generally (if its a long boat) runs straight. Tilt the boat to the side, and the ellipse becomes more of a segment shape (plan...

Scaling a boat through a range of S, M, L, X or HV variants involves juggling a few variables - and becomes a bit more involving than just clicking Edit, Scale and typing in a percentage value. Take an Xcape designed around a 75kg paddler, then sit a 60kg paddler in the same boat. The boat sits high...

I bought one of each of the Radpoles, 14", 23" and a 29". The 29" is good for getting the camera beyond the end of the boat, although it does bounce a little it gets all the boat in frame. The 14" gets the camera vertically above the base and at eye level and without vibration. I use a bolted in bas...
