Re: Kayak paddles and flying
I flew with Scandinavian last year and they only allowed one bag, but it could be a sports bag. So I borrowed a snow board bag off a friend that took two pairs of splits and all my camping and paddling gear that I needed.

Flights are quite cheap (~£200 return to Tromso!!!), but it's a pain getting kit over and renting boats, so I'd love to be able to take a car. Keep us informed please Erling!

Re: Rescue of 'drifting kayak' at Needles
"kayak" can mean anything from inflatable kayak, sit on top through to decked varieties, so it's difficult to know what happened and how quickly the swimmer was parted from their boat.

Re: Sea kayakers to the rescue
It was very hard work... took about 15 minutes to go a few hundred metres. Wind was on my beam, so I was continually paddling on the lee side to try and hold a route slightly into the wind. Kitesurfer was a fairly large chap, and my boat is an Xplore S with relatively low volume stern, so I didn't f...

Re: Sea kayakers to the rescue
I towed a kitesurfer back to the Olympic centre in Portland Harbour yesterday... kite line(s) broke, then his board leash also broke, so he lost his board. He was optimistically trying to swim back with his part inflated kite, but wouldn't have got back without assistance.

Re: Cheshire Ring Race 2014 28th-29 June
Well, that was my first go at the Cheshire Ring... will it be my last?.... I went round in a team of 4 doing a K1 relay, changing paddler at each of the recognised "changeover" points. I paddled 5 legs, about 25 miles, portaged 4 tunnels and loads of locks. our combined time was 18 hours 22 minutes....

Perhaps I need to look at some of these map based Garmins... don't worry, I'll still have a compass and paper (laminated) maps too!

What GPS do people use?
Couldn't find a recent post on this topic, so... My Garmin Etrex is giving up the ghost after years of faithful service. What do people use for a GPS nowadays? I don't particularly need a detailed map, I mainly use a GPS for checking groundspeed, getting occasional accurate position fix and checking...

I'd like a "sea" sub-forum on events - symposiums, races etc. I've always thought discussion on great events like the Ravenglass Seaquest or the Eddystone Challenge get missed because they are buried in the general competition forum.

Great event today, thanks to Liverpool canoe club, Dee sailing club, and whoever is in charge of the weather.
The longer course is a good distance, and the new venue is a great place to hold the event.

Re: Roofrack? Inform your insurer
Thanks for raising this, I'd forgotten to tell DL about a tow bar I'd had fitted to carry a bike rack. I asked about roof racks and she said she'd put it on the policy at no charge and it means it is then covered by the policy. Didn't sound as though it invalidated anything by not registering it, bu...

On the same topic - I've rigged up a deck mounted tow on my rear deck but the velcro pads that the towline bag sticks to have peeled off the deck. What should I glue them back on with?

Re: Race off Dorset Coast.
I don't think the RNLI was actually involved, just the coastguard and the Lulworth range safety boat (see corrected post on FB). Comparing the 90% figure to normal extreme events is a bit unfair... I would have thought that non finishers/injuries etc in extreme events are expected and well drilled s...

Hi Mia - great fan of your blog (made even more amusing by some of the Google translations). I have a Tiderace Xplore S and really like the fit and performance of it. It is slightly "twitchy" when still, so not as stable as say an Alaw when stopped, but great once going and in waves. I've packed it ...

Re: Big fall near Durdle Door
Scary, I walked that section of the path on Easter Sunday along with the many hordes form Lulworth. Could have been very nasty on a busy day. As the article says, there was evidence of other slips on the White Nothe cliffs, so there must be some general instability at the moment.
