Re: Times article
The issue is not the population density of the UK, it's our acceptance that all of the land (and water) is owned by someone, and that ownership of land confers the right to control access. This gives the fishermen who pay to rent a bit of space on the river a sense of injustice stemming from the vie...

Re: Times article
I have started reading Nick Hayes' book and although I'm only a few pages in I can recommend it. It isn't a difficult read, it maintains interest and he certainly clarifies trespass law, albeit from his point of view.

Re: Times article
I've currently reading one of Nick Hayes' graphic books, The Drunken Sailor, which is excellent but has nothing to do with trespass, and best avoided if you are easily offended, but I have just bought his new book which I had on pre-order as I am attracted to his radical thinking on the subject of l...

Re: Reed chillcheater dry cag
Good news on the seams. I used to use Reed cagdecks some time ago, the first one lasted well but the second had problems with seams. I guess I should have followed it up with Reed but I never bothered. I found them very comfortable and surprisingly dry, but the second cagdeck put me off using them a...

Re: Carbon/Kevlar vs Carbon shafts
Back in the days when carbon shafts were introduced for slalom paddles there were a lot of wrist injuries, I think because the shafts were so stiff. They soon introduced some flexibility which mostly stopped the problems. I quite like the idea of carbon/kevlar shafts. They will be a bit heavier than...

Re: A boat to start off with
Sorry about the questions but there is another I would like to ask about as it’s up the road from me. It’s the Pyranha Master gt? It’s cheap and it also looks cheap? Any views in comparison with the others? It's a boat that is marketed for centres really who want a cheap boat that is easy to paddle...

Re: History of Slalom boats
Impulse mostly made Nomad boats under licence. Pete made the boats in his garage which he'd insulated and heated in order to ensure the boats cured properly. It's where you went if you wanted a Nomad design without the notoriously poor Nomad build quality. He did have a couple of his own designs tho...

Re: Help choosing playboat for big guy
If you are buying a boat for surfing, even river surfing, you don't really want a playboat as they won't be fast enough for most green waves. Something more like the Pyranha Loki might be suitable, but you will be on the top limit of the large so you will need to try it for size first. Or maybe even...

Re: Kids helmets -- which one?
The most important thing about a helmet is it must fit properly, a badly fitting helmet may offer little or no protection when it is needed. Unfortunately I am not aware of any kids kayaking helmets, and I know a couple of adults who struggle to find a helmet that is small enough. The usual cycling ...

Re: Lighter weight plastic whitewater boats
I guess that paddlers expect more from their boats these days. I think paddlers who haven't paddled in glass tend not to be quite as paranoid about rock avoidance, plus people now play the river a little differently (rock spins etc) which will be harder on boats. Expectation I think is set by the c...

Re: Lighter weight plastic whitewater boats
The weight of a plastic boat is always going to be a trade-off with durability. The early plastic boats were very light compared to modern boats, but they didn't keep their shape too well and wore out pretty quickly. I guess that paddlers expect more from their boats these days. Some of the manufact...

Re: Fence crossing river Dee, Corwen
Presumably the local paddlers will be on to the EA or Welsh equivalent to get this removed. A couple of trees up against that and you have a flooding issue that's apart from the H&S issue, maybe get the local HSE involved, there could be fines or prison involved! I would have thought that if a tree...

Re: When where who?
I think the first commercial throw bag was made by Pete "Green Slime" Knowles probably as early as the mid 70s and the same design was sold until quite recently by Suzy's Sweatshop. Before that we used to make our own from 2 litre plastic bottles. Pete was a legend from the early days of adventure k...

Re: J bars and strapping down
Uprights are the way to go. You can get 3 or 4 boats secure on a rack with 1 pair of uprights depending on the length of the bars, you usually can't get more than 2 boats on a rack with the type of J bar the OP is describing. I have my uprights set up offset to one side of the car so I can get my bo...

Re: How do you break a boat?
The only plastic boat I broke was my beloved Pyranha Stunt 300. It had the infamous double concave hull which despite working quite well from a performance point of view earned a bad reputation for splitting when you landed on a rock. The rock in my case was on the Colwyn, it could be seen quite cle...

Re: What degree WW paddle
I think I know what you mean, I think the difficulty I am having comes from a difference of understanding the meaning of the term "feather". I have always thought that to feather the blade was to adjust the angle of the blade in the water by rotating the shaft in the control hand which is achieved b...

Re: What degree WW paddle
Years ago the theory was that you had 90 degree feather to reduce resistance to wind when the top blade is moving through the air. Few people adhere to this any longer, but there is still a reason to feather the blades, the paddle shaft rotates as you switch between sides of the boat and the feather...

Re: Left-handed paddlers
My sister is right handed and paddles left handed feather, purely down to the fact that her first kayak coach paddled left-handed. I would say get right-handed feather then things are a lot simpler in the future in the event they need to borrow a paddle. Also they will have much more choice in the l...

Re: First descent of Fairy Glen
In my opinion this is a question that cannot be answered. This may be the case on some rivers, but the Fairy Glen isn't very easy to exit once you've set off. I guess it is possible to get on our off just above Fairy Falls, but anywhere else would be something of a mission. I would expect that ther...

Re: Warm When Wet
I really don't think this is true, it certainly doesn't fit with my experience. Your test isn't meaningful, a damp hand will soon dry on a windy day, wet kit will take a lot longer to dry out. When you are immersed in water the water next to your skin is not moving, or at least not very fast, and as...

Re: Warm When Wet
You will find fleece is surprisingly effective at keeping you warm in the water, not as good as neoprene on its own, but when combined with half decent waterproofs it still is probably warmer than the combination of neoprene and waterproofs. I did my WWSR wearing fleece and separates which involved ...

Re: Warm When Wet
The above is totally opposite to my experience. Neoprene is dreadful when it is wet, my guess is that it traps the water against your skin so that it is able to absorb any warmth whereas fleece (or at least the right kind of fleece) quickly wicks the water away from your skin before it has a chance ...

Re: White water kayak that's also good for sea surfing
My Prozone was great in the surf, it's super sharp rails helped but also meant it was a bit of a handful on white water. My I3 also makes a good surf kayak and it's a great ww kayak, though most paddlers found it a bit to lively. What you are looking for is a boat with a flat hull and sharp rails an...

Re: Any ideas on model please?
On a cycling forum I lurk around they have a thread called ebay monstrosities which shows some horrifically modified bikes and unbelievable home-builds. If we had such a thread on here this would have to be entered (I know it's on Gumtree not ebay, but the principles there).
