Re: PFD - Do you ever paddle without one?

I have paddled in Canada a fair bit and my experience of Canadian paddlers is that they do not wear PFDs habitually as happens in U.K. They tend to paddle without PFDs unless the situation requires it. I am talking about big river trips in canoes, e.g. The Nahanni.

Re: Access for All

This alleged restriction of access only occurs in England and Wales. Other countries do not have such restrictions, with some minor river-specific restrictions. Paddlers in Northern Ireland are not subject to these restrictions, apart from some minor cases. The access in Scotland is entrenched in la...

Re: British Canoeing AGM

I went to a BCU AGM once. It was such a novelty that someone who is not a member of the clique attended, I was asked who I was and what I was doing there. I asked how much of their income from recreational members was spent on access. They didn't know and said they would get back to me. They never d...

Here is an example of an organisation, which has a good relationship with an active membership, does.

http://community.thebmc.co.uk/Event.aspx?id=3533

To be fair, I believe that the BCU has tried this approach in the past but gave up because nobody was interested.

Re: Sneaky BCU Changes

Unfortunately, there will be little or no representation by rank and file canoeists at the AGM, because as a group we are about as apathetic as it is possible to be. I attended one AGM and found no one there who was not a BCU functionary. The meeting was a joke as a result.

Re: Environment Agency

As ever with these ' issues', fishing takes priority over all river environmental concerns. The prime cause of introduction of invasive and destructive species and disease is from 'Stocking' rivers. This is done for the promotion of angling. The action of stocking rivers, has been shown, time and a...

Re: Governing body not interested in river access any more?

The BCU have maintained that they have been actively campaigning for more than thirty years and that this is a number one priority for them. In the past they have claimed that every employee considered this a major issue. Since this is either untrue or they have been remarkably unsuccessful, they ha...

From Canoe England North West: This section of the River Lune has been used for Kayaking & Canoeing since at least the 1970’s. In the 1980’s National Division 2 and Division 4 Canoe Slalom Events were held here. These events were run from the North Bank of the river, where there was parking, toilet...

CE & Halton Rapids, River Lune Lancaster

In the current issue of the BCU's membership magazine, "Canoe Focus", there is an article about about Canoe England having leased a section of the riverbank giving access to Halton rapids. The article explains that "negotiations are in progress with the fishing rights owner to increase the number of...

Re: the One Show tonight

I have seen no evidence that BCU is actively engaged in any Access Campaigning activities at all... I would be very glad to be proved wrong... My guess is that the 14 pages were written by their lawyers strictly in rebuttal of the accusations made by Anglers Trust... Two organizations, largely irrel...

Re: 38 - too old to start working in outdoor pursuits?

Are you too old? No, of course not. That is not the real question... The real question is can you make a satisfactory living and support your loved ones? The answer? Probably not. You will be competing with people with no dependents who are prepared to work for nothing... This is what distinguishes ...

Re: BCU Told to Put up or Shut up and Respect the law

I note that the Angling Trust (AT) is only prepared to meet with BCU, if the BCU accepts in advance that the AT's view of the law is correct. This makes any such meeting unlikely. The ball is in AT's court to propose a meeting free of such conditions, if they are serious about making progress. The A...

I am just wondering how they 'blocked' it.... Given DEFRA have said they don't know what the law is about access rights, (see www.riveraccessforall.co.uk), should the anglers' 'right' to block the activity be taken seriously? Is there something special about this river as far as access rights are co...

Re: SCA / BCU - changes at the top - -

One of the reasons why the BCU seems to behave as if it has little concern for its members, is because its members do not attend the AGM. This gives the officers of the BCU freedom to behave in any way they think fit. Membership apathy is the root cause of the current malaise. Just a hundred members...
