Great minds and all that. Good luck, hand paddling is an art but makes you hyper aware of edge control

You'll find it more snug. Generally not comfy for a full day of getting in and out. As a first fix what shoes are you wearing? Try to avoid bare feet but anything from neoprene socks up might be needed

Is wild swimming the ally canoeing has needed to get access sorted?

The latest article on river access and wild swimming. Hopefully 2021 will see as much pressure put on the ridiculous English river access situation as 2020 did. The more people swim in rivers the better. https://metro.co.uk/2021/03/06/wild-swimming-is-booming-so-why-is-access-such-a-nightmare-141983...

Re: Public access to land and waterways time for change

Really hope for success. Optimism is just tempered by the time that this has been going through the same cycle. Just think of the section on access in the Terry Storey guidebook which includes pretty much the same argument made by a member of CRACK who fought the access fight in the early 80s. Good ...

Gopaddling app

Has anyone thought about adding your favourite river access and egress points to the gopaddling app? It'd be a great way to democratise river access. So many people getting into sup, wild swimming and kayaking that they deserve to know where's available for paddling. More people accessing the water ...

Good call.
Esk and Avon just mean river, hence the large number of river rivers, especially where the locals aren't very imaginative.

Re: Tryweryn - where does the water come from?

My understanding is that the two rivers are doing quite different jobs. The mighty T is there to provide compensation flow for the Dee, the aim is therefore to run down reservoir levels during dry periods, the only restrictions would be if the top reservoir started low or the Dee was too high. The c...

Whole thing's a shambles, how they've taken a well used facility open virtually every day and turned it into something that's open every other blue moon is beyond me.

Tilt - favourite day of UK boating, river, level, company all spot on

Re: Using whistles on rivers

The use of whistles on rivers has always disturbed me. It seems to have come from New Zealand where rivers can be very steep and very remote. In the UK line of sight is much better and there's much more chance of whistles being overheard by outdoors folk who consider a whistle to be a piece of emerg...

Agree with Findhorn, similar experience throwing kit up the cliffs and scrambling after it as it rose 3m in 5 mins at Randolf's. Also similar on the Ure at a slalom at West Tanfield. From div 4 course to all gates being garotting hazard in 5 mins. Strangely both on perfectly dry days with rain overn...

To be fair it only had 4 gears. Think engines have moved on a bit since then, the cars you're considering probably have servo assisted brakes and a passenger side mirror 4 boats on a 1l 1984 polo. Needed 3rd gear to get across A66 but it was the finest of paddle wagons. Probably >20k miles of boatin...

Re: Guidebooks - 1st descent info

Old thread but it's drawn me in There are so many more climbs than rivers, UK whitewater GR4 and above has fewer rivers than a single big crag has routes. The way down a river is not subject to someone having the imagination to invent it, it's top to bottom. A river changes every time you're on it, ...
