Re: Keltney Burn

I paddled the lower section down to the big double stepped fall full of trees a few years back, think its down in the book as a portage. Would agree with Dave B, its a pretty unpleasant run with a lot trees. Would have been about a medium level I think, had to walk out though as it was getting on to...

Re: to old to start

Although I'd been sea paddling since 12 I didn't get introduced to whitewater until I was 35. The only advice is the earlier you start the less fear you have! 15-20 Invincible and indestructible. 20-25 You know you may pick up a few bruises but hey that's part of the fun. 25-30 You go through phase...

But really think St Andrews probably tops Devon... Everyone 'bigs up' their local river and it just happens that the dart is the local for more than half the UK population....

Re: Scottish Borders paddling

Don't knock the Borders, I've paddled in a fair few countries now and the Minnoch in condition is very hard to beat! Def go for the west Borders as the East Borders (where I'm from) is not so hot, the Ettrick gorge/Upper Ettrick and White adder are nice G3 runs but the best is in the west. Minnoch/C...

Re: Leh and Ladakh River Advice

We were over there last year, its a great place! Was the end of July/Start of August and VERY hot, the Zanskar gorge was def not a nice G3 when I was high!
Sections of the Indus above the Zanskar confulence (but not to far above!) are a nice G2/3 paddle, we did part of that for a warm up.

Not very high but not very low. Oetz is sitting between 1m and 1.40m depending on day time (weir gauge). Inn is coming up ever day now as its very hot etc, on the high side of medium just now. Heard the Sanna is quite high now too though I've not been up for a week.

Re: Raft Guide Training with WWI

Yeah man def try and get a job off the back of the training course if you are going as you will forget stuff etc very quickly if you don't get a season in after training. If you do the training I've found that every country etc has their own qualification system so don't expect to get a job outside ...

Basically it is good there and I'd def rate the Minnoch as being one of the best rivers I've ever paddled! Its very unpredictable with water levels etc, if the job is for a few months go for it and you might get lucky!

As for the rest you’ve hit the nail on the head, putting others down to make myself feel like “the big man, master of the universe” is my bread and butter... Sounds about right there. I’m afraid that I’m both too busy and also have more respect for Mark, Neil, Nick and many others whom I’d be embar...

Re: More rivers to be lost to Hydro schemes

Dont expect many people to care around here bigbird... You can't win them all, BUT as Ryan says the SCA cares *a lot*; in fact their efforts to save the Braan are unique worldwide in having saved a river from hydro (which is rare enough on its own) for its recreational potential . My comment comes ...

Though a lot of UK rivers do not look as impressive as bigger features in other countries. Maybe why there are not any modern kayaking dvds featuring the UK? Either that or unpredictable water levels.

North Esk: Another Tree

Another tree down on the North Esk. Just after where the little burn flows in river left after fish ladder falls. It goes all the way over the river but not on a rapid so you can see it coming. Prob be a portage when its not high.
