Re: Coast guard stations closing in 2014apparently

I think this because our military SAR will go to any length and cost is never an issue, but as a privatised service surely they will make judgements based on £'s? I don't mean the guys on the job but the man behind the desk, will they go to help the walker who has injured an ankle whilst on the Scot...

Re: Coast guard stations closing in 2014apparently

Its just so wrong, lives will be lost!
Also the RAF and Navy will no longer be there for SAR, will a privatised company perform as well?

I'm 6' 4" and 20st, I have the Romany Surf and its fits well, I have the foam seat not glass, the Excel would also be a good choice as would an Explorer HV.

Re: beach pebbles jamming skeg

I have the same problem and when I posted about it someone suggested a piece of tarp or something like that, you put it underneath and when you launch, you pull it in on a line and store it!
I never tried it and so can't report on its success

Re: Planning an epic charity crossing. Thoughts and advice

Hi Tank, I looked into tufted channel crossing and its full of red tape, I read somewhere that the french authorities aren't keen on kayakers approaching their coastline, can't remember the exact problem. I have osteoarthritis and was planning a charity paddle, unfortunately the last surgery left me...

Re: Adopt a codger

The Karitek easy load is amazing, I can load my kayak whilst sat in my wheelchair, but Ade has a point! I may be able to lad but I have to get my kayak to the car in the first place, then when I arrive at the coast, I have to get it to the water, luckily this is Whee my next assist comes into play, ...

Re: Numb Lower Half

Apparently most people don't sit properly, I had an appointment at the wheelchair clinic and two women analysed the way I sit and I lean to the left slightly and sit back on my lumbar. Apparently the trick is to lean forward and push your backside as far back into any chair/seat and then sit upright...

Re: Kayaker finds WW2 bomb

I worked for the MOD at P&EE Shoeburyness years ago and people don't realise what these things can do even in their salt soaked state. As Rich said, leave it alone, even if you can't mark it with GPS or by a landmark, its best left

Kayaker finds WW2 bomb

In the Southend echo there is a story of how 5 illegal immigrants were caught after police were called to the beach to help deal with a WW2 bomb. A kayaker had found the device and dragged it to within 200yards of the shore! The Thames is littered with old bombs that were dropped by our German frien...

Re: Flares - what to get?

I had a pack of the mini flares and they went past their date and I haven't replaced them, they are very pricey but obviously if needed then its worth every penny.
I was going to get some mini flares again, is there a video showing the various flares being used?

Re: Four legged friend

Wow, that's a big dog on a kayak! Jasper wouldn't make a difference as he is so small, also dachshunds like to be under cover, he is always hiding under blankets and cushions. Kurt from Nomad said his dog sits on his lap with his head out the opening in his spray deck for pumping out, I bet that loo...

I know of one person who takes their dog out paddling with them and I would love to take my miniature dachshund out on the water, how many of you paddle with your dog and what are your experiences?

High and dry

If you are in trouble and need to call out the RNLI, is it best to exit the kayak as they arrive? Does it make it easier if you are in the water, actually this sounds daft as I'm typing but I will still ask

Re: Non-return Valve for electric pump

The Hozelock valve is not a non return valve, it works the other way round so you can remove nozzles and lawn waterers etc from a hose end without walking back to the tap
Well what the hell was going on with my hose? Its a conspiracy I tell you! :-)

Re: Non-return Valve for electric pump

I finally realised that water flowed out of the attachment but when I plugged the spray gun and sprinkler in, there was ...

Re: Non-return Valve for electric pump

As Mike said, they do a one way connector, if you look some have an arrow on the connector. I think they make them because some people use those spray guns that have a fertiliser reservoir attached and it is to stop anything running back up the system. I have no idea why or how it would though!

Re: Non-return Valve for electric pump

I fitted the same pump to my kayak and came across a solution by mistake! I didn't have all the necessary bits to install and so I searched my shed for a few bits that would make do, I ended up using a garden hose pipe coupling, I wish I could figure out how to get a photo on here to show you. Basic...
