GUIDE TO THE RIVER WYE (Newbridge to Builth Wells) NAME OF RIVER: Wye. WHERE IS IT?: Mid Wales. OS Landranger 147 and 161. PUT-INS/ TAKE-OUTS: Start at Newbridge. The finish point is the car park in Builth Wells upstream of the bridge. APPROX LENGTH: 9 miles? TIME NEEDED: Unknown. ACCESS SITUATION: There is some permitted access. Contact the access officer for dates and latest. See http://www.mountainandwater.co.uk for more info. WATER LEVEL INDICATORS: Unknown. GRADING: Flat water with one grade 3. MAJOR HAZARDS/ FALLS: There is a tree in the final constriction of the grade 3 that causes trouble to the inexperienced at low water. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A lot of flat water and one grade 3 known as The Rocks on an S bend. OTHER NOTES: I believe that there is no access for the section between Rhayader and Newbridge any longer but I do remember a reasonable grade 3 just after an old railway bridge. It used to be possible to takeout/ put-in at the bridge signposted Llanwrthwl...anyone know more about the Wye upstream of New bridge? The section below Builth includes 'Hell Hole'.
