GUIDE TO THE RIVER TUMMEL (Dunalastair Water to Loch Tummel) NAME OF RIVER: Tummel. WHERE IS IT?: The Tummel is a dam release river which has two separate canoeable white water sections. The upper Tummel (described here) flows from Dunlastair Water (E of Kinloch Rannoch) into Loch Tummel and the Lower Tummel flows out from Loch Tummel to Loch Faskally near Pitlochry. The lower section is the better of the two. PUT-INS/ TAKE-OUTS: Carry down to the river from the road about 100 yards below the dam. There is a small lay by on a tight bend in the road which can be useful. At the end of the trip if you want to avoid the long flat section from the end of the white water to Loch Tummel, then get out where the road rejoins the river after the last fall. Marked by a wooden landing stage. APPROX LENGTH: 2 miles. TIME NEEDED: 1 - 2 hours. ACCESS SITUATION: No problems reported. WATER LEVEL INDICATORS: Dam release. GRADING: Grade 2-3. MAJOR HAZARDS/ FALLS: Be prepared for some steep near vertical drops (up to 8 feet). GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Initially very shallow. After 700 yards one steep double drop (visible from the road) is followed by a series of other shallow falls and chutes cut into the exposed rocky river bed. OTHER NOTES: Plenty of other paddling up this valley...the Gaur and Garbh Ghaoir upstream, the lower Tummel downstream. Dave Dunnett, Peterhead Canoe Club (August 2005)...'Peterhead Canoe Club visited this section for the first time on 21/8/05. We put in on the fish ladder about 5 steps from the top and bumped down. From the coloured plastic on the walls it was clear that other had done the same. The majority of the trip was a good 2/3 but there is a large two step fall about half way down which was a grade 4. The scalling of the fish ladder was an excellent way to start this trip. Parking was a problem with only room for two/ three vehicles at the put in.' CONTRIBUTED BY: Simon Dawson, |
