Tees access arrangements

(Published in Canoeist magazine, January 2002)

Access on the 8km stretch of the upper Tees from High Force to Middleton bridge can be obtained by purchasing a £3 day ticket from the High Force Hotel. Contact the LAQ, Adam Hearn, on 01833 640881 or e-mail kingsway@bigfoot.com for further details. Access on the 12km stretch of the middle Tees between Barnard Castle and Winston bridge is available from 1st. Nov 01 to 31st Mar 02. Access at Barnard Castle is from the S bank between the stone road bridge and the green footbridge. The only other access/egress points are at Abbey Rapids (between Thorsgill Beck and Abbey bridge) and at Whorlton Lido, where a small charge will be made for parking. Egress at Winston bridge is via the gravel track on river right about 100m above the bridge. All canoeists are asked to keep off the R Greta as part of this access agreement made between the landowners and BCU (N), BCU (Yorks) and the ACU. For further details contact the LAO, Ali Rowell, on 01325 462108 or 07855 374001.

Following negotiations with Wycliffe Estates Ltd, an access agreement on the section of the River Tees between Whorlton Lido and the Winston Bridge has been agreed. The main conditions of this agreement are as follows:

1. The agreed access and egress point on Wycliffe Estate is at map reference NZ115146. This is on the south bank (river right) of the Tees below the falls.

2. Canoeists should park their vehicles at Whorlton Lido. There is a charge payable to the owners of Whorlton Lido.

3. Canoeing will be permitted between 1st November and 31st March.

4. Canoeing at other times is not permitted.

5. There are no other access or egress points on land owned by Wycliffe Estates. Inspection of river hazards from the bank is not permissible.

6. This agreement is for groups of no more than 8 craft.

7. Additional access for competition and recreational events will require separate negotiation via the local access organizer, Alistair Rowell (tel 01325 462108).

8. Wycliffe Estates Ltd require that all paddlers have appropriate third party and public liability insurance. All canoeing, as with other rivers, is at the canoeists' own risk. Wycliffe Estates Ltd accept no responsibility for any accident or losses of equipment.

It is essential that all canoeists abide by this access agreement if access is to be maintained. The loss of this stretch of water would be a sad occasion. The trustees of Wycliffe Estate and the LAO have put much work into this agreement. Please help maintain it.
