GUIDE TO THE RIVER STORT (Spellbrook to Bishop's Stortford) NAME OF RIVER: River Stort. WHERE IS IT?: Harlow, Essex. Map. PUT-INS/ TAKEOUTS: Put in: Harlow Mill, A414 about ½ mile north of the station. Also looks possible at Spellbrook, 1 mile south of Stortford, near level crossing. APPROX LENGTH: Out and back to Bishop’s Stortford outskirts, 8 miles TIME NEEDED: 3 hours. ACCESS SITUATION: Public navigation. WATER LEVEL INDICATORS: Regulated by locks. GRADING: I – placid. MAJOR HAZARDS/ FALLS: A real pig of a portage at Pishiobury Lock 1 mile above Harlow – steep banks, brambles, nettles – you name it! GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Pleasantly rural, despite being on edge of London conurbation. OTHER NOTES: Should also be possible to canoe downstream to the confluence with the Lea.
