GUIDE TO THE RIVER EAST LYN
(Malmsmead to Brendon)
NAME OF RIVER: East Lyn.
WHERE IS IT?: Northern Exmoor, Devon. Map.
PUT-INS/ TAKE-OUTS: Begin on Badgworthy Water, Oare Water or launch at the ford in Malmsmead village (SS 792477). This section ends at Brendon (SS 766482), but carrying on down the upper East Lyn is recommended.
TIME NEEDED: 45 mins?
WATER LEVEL INDICATORS: I have only paddled this in high-ish levels - about 1.5 on the riverside gauge at Malmsmead, about 2 on the Environment Agency East Lyn gauge. Higher would be good. A gauge only visible from the river (about halfway down) read '8'.
GRADING: Grade 3 (3+).
MAJOR HAZARDS/ FALLS: None.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A nice extension to the East Lyn, if you have high water conditions.
Below Malmsmead, the river (actually Badgworthy Water at this point) joins Oare Water and becomes the East Lyn. This has pooldrop Grade 3 rapids, with a riverwide ledge forming a harder rapid. A good warm-up for the much harder stuff downstream.
