GUIDE TO THE RIVER NITH (Mennock to Glen Airlie Picnic Site) NAME OF RIVER: Nith. WHERE IS IT?: South west Scotland, between Sanquar and Thornhill on the A 76.. PUT-INS/ TAKE-OUTS: The put-in is about 4 km north of the picnic site, just past a wee hamlet called Mennock. Drive through Mennock then turn first left crossing over the Nith, put-in at this bridge. finish at the Glen Airlie picnic site off the A76. Or carry on downstream. APPROX LENGTH: 4 km. TIME NEEDED: 1 hour? ACCESS SITUATION: Unknown, however Sunday paddling throughout the year seems trouble free. WATER LEVEL INDICATORS: Looks bony? Don't get on. GRADING: Grade 2 (3). MAJOR HAZARDS/ FALLS: Unknown. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: It is mainly a grade 2 section, with one grade 3 rapid about half-way down. This is for low water, however, as with the rest of the Nith, I guess it would start to wash out in higher flows. OTHER NOTES: I know people from Edinburgh Kayak Club have done this as a combined trip with the lower section, although this would be a very long day. CONTRIBUTED BY: Ian Thom. |
