GUIDE TO LANGSTONE HARBOUR
NAME OF RIVER: Langstone
Harbour.
WHERE IS IT?: East Hampshire. Map.
PUT-INS/ TAKEOUTS: Sinah Common, Hayling Island
SU688000 (public slipway, pay-and-display parking nearby) at any state
of tide; Langstone Bridge
SU720040 (free
parking south of bridge and west of A3023) at high tide only.
APPROX LENGTH: 6 miles up the
harbour and back.
TIME NEEDED: Two hours.
ACCESS SITUATION: Public
tidal water.
WATER LEVEL INDICATORS:
Best to get to top of harbour at high tide, but slack
low tide also lasts long enough not to create problems.
GRADING: I – placid.
MAJOR HAZARDS/ FALLS: Strong tides near Sinah
Common in harbour mouth. The more open water in mid-harbour can be
rough in windy conditions.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Sandbanks and mudflats,
good views of South Downs and Isle of Wight.

OTHER NOTES: A pleasant trip at low water is to
go up the main Langstone Channel and pick one’s way back through the
small channels of Rod Rythe and Sinah lake. Just north of the put-in
is a Mulberry Harbour unit that never made it to France on D-day.
