GUIDE TO ALLT A' GHARBH-CHOIRE NAME OF RIVER: Allt a' Gharbh-Choire. WHERE IS IT: Just north of the Glen Shee ski resort on the A93, this mountain stream flows into the upper Clunie. It is a few minutes drive south of the Callater. PUT-INS/ TAKE-OUTS: Parking at the car park by the confluence with the River Clunie, just north of the ski centre, walk up the path until you reach a waterfall. Put-in below this. Take-out either at the car-park by the confluence or continue down to the A93 road bridge. APPROX LENGTH: About 1km down to the car-park by the Clunie confluence, a further 500m if you continue down the upper Clunie to the A93. TIME NEEDED: 1 hour. ACCESS SITUATION: The car-park is used by walkers. There is a convenient path up the side of the river. WATER LEVEL INDICATORS: It should look worthwhile from the A93 road. It requires heavy rain. GRADING: Continuous grade 3 and 4. MAJOR HAZARDS / FALLS: Putting in below the waterfall the river is never harder than grade 4. All of it. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The river drops nearly 50m in one kilometre. The run is fast with a few tight and technical rapids, ideal for Topo's. It is read and run most of the way down with a few quick paddle strokes needed. OTHER NOTES: The Callater was running the day I ran this. CONTRIBUTED BY: Ian Thom. |
