FIRE!

Postby tpage on Fri Oct 01, 2004 4:18 pm

I am absolutely with Mike on this one- a fire is essential for the full outdoor experience.
What is the general opinion on burning shore rubbish- not just your own paper and plastic stuff- but bits of rope, foam and plastic containers that always litter the offshore islands. It would be virtually impossible to remove these yourself or indeed persuade the local authority to remove it. So I guess the choice is to stick in on your campfire- or leave it to pile up.
Obviously burning ropes and plastic is not great for the environment- but is it better to just leave it. Personally,I tend to burn some of it, but I'm not sure if Im doing the right thing. Anyone got an answer for this?- Tony

Fire

Postby Douglas Wilcox on Fri Oct 01, 2004 10:31 pm

Well call me an aronisist but I light fires whenever I can, why I even buy bags of firewood to take to woodless beaches and have even transported peats between three islands just to enjoy a good fire under the stars. Even worse, I build "white man's fires", big as possible!

Yes I have burnt plastic netting, (risk to wildlife) but I dont burn all the plastic on the beach simply because its not a very aesthetc fire and there is nothing to beat a decent wood fire which is why I often take a sack of logs along or gather wood from several beaches along the way.

Well that might be quite reprehensible! ??

Did you ever stop to consider that those 3 islands had developed different micro eco systems and that by moving those peats around all the bacteria and creepy crawlies you brought with you may have may have contaminated those other ecosystems?????

If only there was tongue in cheek smily to make my point properly!
:P
