Washburn today - thanks guys

Postby steve t on Sun Aug 24, 2008 10:45 pm

One of our guys got his H3 pinned between two rocks on the new feature below the main weir on the Washburn today (without him in it).

We had help from a few others to recover it, just thought I'd pop on here on the off chance that you might be reading to say thanks. At one point I thought that it was going to become one of the new features by itself.

There were a couple helping by rope pulling with me, but most thanks go to the guy stood on the rock with one of our club - when the boat moved, the rock went with it and both were dumped into the main flow, thankfully with no major consequences.

Cheers lads.

Your welcome, I was the one who set up the pulley thing, I think it worked too well and managed to topple the boulder too in the process of removing the boat, I'm fine though.

On the Washburn note, what do people think of the new changes, I like the changes to the 'big weir', while the size has been reduced, the hole at the bottom is far better for playing in, and the new drops half way down are really cool too, with some good potential for surfing. I'll try and find some pics for those who havent seen it, or if anyone else has some that'd be good.

Ahh, so that what happened. I was sat in the big eddy above the drop thinking, are they playing tug of war down there? (I could just see a bunch of people pulling on a rope) but know I know what actually happened.
Good job knowone got hurt

I thought the changes were great! The way the large drop is now is much better for playing, I couldent get into it before. Its quality for spins if you can get tucked into that river right hand corner, its hard to keep up! I had some great fun in my recoil there today.

The lower drops are also good, on my last run I decided to go for a play in them, the second one was actually a bit stickier than it looked and I got a good binning which definately cleared my sinuses!

Thanks again for the help, made the day a little more exciting anyway.

As far as the changes are concerned, I’m not really a playboater (I’ll surf the odd wave but don’t really like getting trashed if I can help it!) so can’t comment on the potential for play. I thought that the new features add interest to the run, especially on the section from the main weir down to the finish which didn’t have as much interest previously. It hasn’t really increased the technical difficulty, so it remains a useful river to bring intermediates to introduce them to fast water.

I understand that there is to be a larger car park built at the bottom – that would be a very useful improvement.

My only concern would be the feature which pinned our H3. I was above the weir with the swimmer when it got pinned, so I’m not sure how it got itself in there, nor whether it could have done that with a paddler in it. However, if the boat had been occupied at the time it would have been more of a worry since the front deck is dented and the foam block had popped out of place (don’t know if that was done during the pin or the recovery). Of course, the rock has moved now, so it might be better or worse – it would be easier to judge when the water’s off.

Awww, the big drop used to be fast enough to get clean in the air!
