Do paddlers in Blue kayaks swim more than other paddlers?

Postby Canoe Lu on Sun Apr 20, 2008 8:12 pm

A 10 yr old I was paddling with the other weekend announced after she capsized her blue dynamo that "People in Blue Kayaks always swim". "I swim, Mummy swims, Andrew swims etc etc....."
Her Mum (in a Blue inazone) laughed & said "But Lu doesn't swim & she has a blue kayak". I then had to admit that I had a couple of swims over the winter and maybe she had a point.
This reminded me of my 1st time down the Dart Loop - it was my 1st time on moving water in my new blue inazone & some guy also in a blue inazone in a different group swam about 3 times and each time his kayak went past us, someone in my group said " oh Lu's swimming" and each time I had to point out that I was sitting there in the eddy having got down the particular feature with no problems. That wasn't the only blue kayak that spat it's owner out that weekend as I saw a few different blue kayaks do the Dart solo.
So the point of this is - should my next kayak be blue (I like blue & I can't find a pink one I like) or another colour ? orange seems very popular. Are blue boats jinxed ? or is it just the people I know ? lol

Also do slalom paddlers generally not roll ? There seemed to be a lot of swimmers at Matlock last weekend.

I havnt swam in about 3 years paddling class 4 and 5, I have broken my foot plate, fractured my leg on that one. banged my head alot even cracked a helmet. and the only boats I've had have been blue.

it may well be true though as I have black patches

Most of the kayaks I have seen without paddlers have been blue with white. One of the guys I paddle with used to have a blue & white kayak and although I am not 100% I have actually seen him swim he is certainly a lot more confident since he got his new boat - all blue. (could be the model - could be the colour??)

Take care when changing your boat colour, I must warn you than boats in a yellow/orange mix colour are also prone to causing swims..... ;-) Well in my experience anyway!!

Red White and Blue boats cause severe pain, until you swim, then they bear down on you like a juggernaut, and before you know it you're in an eddy clutching your stomach.

I agree. Swam loads out of my Prozone and that was blue. Not swam since I sold it and bought an orange innazone, and that was about 4 years ago :-)

blue and yellow boats

Postby Jennie on Sun Apr 20, 2008 11:09 pm

Hmmmmm I've not yet been swimming from my yellow sea boat (yes, I realised that having said that it will probably now start ejecting me at every opportunity) however my blue river boat has thrown me out numerous times.

I previously thought this was due to operator error but now I realise it was my choice of colour. The question is, in what colour boat are you least likely to swim?

it always seems to be orange or yellow ones being pulled out of holes or pins or dragged from the river on our trips

Blue boats certainly look worse in photos. Blue water, blue boat...

Not quite as bad as white though.

I remember sitting in an Eddy on the dart loop when 3 identical Yellow Dagger GTs swam at the same point all from different groups. Did make me giggle.

My last swim was in a yellow boat...

I have a pale blue slalom boat and swim more than any of the other Div 2 ladies :-( Maybe I will have to borrow the club's boat when it arrives... It will not be blue...

Shut up Tom, what do you know? After all, genetically you've got more in common with crabs than human beings...

hmmmm..... there goes my idea of yellow with a splash of orange.

No one has mentioned pink or purple kayaks but they are rare.

I like that theory. It may explain a lot about my paddling right now!

So is it blue boats or blue-and-white boats that are the worst for throwing their paddler out?

Saw a paddler running furiously down the side of the Ski Slope at Tryweryn yesterday shouting" Swimmer Swimmer" just in front of his mate who had not even capsized at that point. He did capsize when he got to the bottom and he did swim but it must have been poor for his confidence ! Must have been the blue boat the guy was paddling

I have a purple and white one and have swum in that - BUT I am not the sort of person who plays in features and was talked into doing so so I don't think that was the boats fault.

You're all making it up. Too much reckoning, in my reckoning. Everyone knows yellow boats are the safest. This has been proven. Some people have yellow boats, and don't swim very often. Therefore they're better. All you people in blue boats aren't helping yourselves. the more you talk about it, the more it's going to happen. Self fulfilling prophecy. Like in Greek myths. Only with kayaks. Which aren't Greek. Or mythological.
Buy the ticket, take the ride.
