Could be quite interesting on a multi-day open crossing. Some things just shouldn't make it into a blog.

As solo paddler extraordinare Bernie Howgate points out, nobody talks about the solo paddler's masturbation habits!!

Right. Nobody does.
Not to mention the hardy times that foot slave, shaven, blonde porn stars, endure when expeditioning.
They hardly get any attention.
Unfair.

I think it's a case of "men are ok but you can't beat the real thing" or "I did the circumnavigation in search of my right hand"

No expeditions for me - I'm just going paddling with my mates!!

Took my a while to realise what Mark was referring to, as having come across this blog before I didnt get to the end of the page on that occasion either due to extreme boredom.

What tedious self obsessed cr*p

Perhaps we should have a small competition to find the most pretentious American paddling blog.

I thought that was the definition of a blog.

You all seem to be adopting a rather British attitude. I was quite moved.

You are quite right of course Geoff.

I heartily recommend Runswick2000's link, a couple of quotes to give you a taste:

"Another challenge of perception is change. When peoples lives change we often perceive THEY change. Of course more often than not, they don't. "

"What's this life all about?"

Brilliant.

Well, it's a personal blog, you're allowed to be self-indulgent, that's rather the whole point...I follow and enjoy the Wisconsin blog, but simply employ a mental 'filter' which selects out the stuff about paddling.

I also read and thoroughly enjoy all the bits of Kayak Wisconsin which are about paddling.

Kudos to Owen! I am CANADIAN:-)

Yes Owen, of course I'm Canadian, so my" tedious, self-obsessed, pretentious" blog startled and stirred a few Brits? :-) (And doesn't qualify for Bonnie's search which I would say is highly subjective, eh?)

Blogging is all about self-indulgence. Kudos to Mark R. whose blog, though conservative, but informative with fine photography, is linked on my blog:-)

As indeed is masturbation..........which just goes to prove that there is little wrong with a bit of self-indulgence from time to time!

Good discussion really. Even from the guys who think we "suck". LOL!! I write of course each day. Somedays are certainly better than others, some are total crap, some days I'm totally narcissistic. Blogs can be like that. Especially if you set a goal to post everyday. Often in seakayaing there is just nothing all that new going on, or I may have emails out waiting for information from others, or be researching or whatever. There are lots of days when sea kayaking is just not foremost either. But as I said today on my post, Life and sea kayaking are one in the same in my experience so everything get's all mixed up. :) Of course, no one has to read them either if they don't want to.

Something worth noting though. Over the 2+ years my blog has been up, the most consistently read bits are the personal stuff, then of course the "tabloid" type posts about known paddlers. All the gear reviews, skill stuff and the rest are at the bottom. They are read daily, but are not the most popular content. In addition the daily readership has continued to grow as well. Lord knows why exactly. LOL!!

Some of you may know that a couple days back I delt with this very subject. I had planned to move all my personal narcissism to a different blog. So no one had to suffer it. :) The reaction I got was negative. I received a good amount of email saying, that all that stuff was important too and that there are plenty of other "news and gear" blogs already. So I took that into account and changed my mind. Another good thing that comes from being more personal is the contacts I've made with other paddles that often feel the same or oppositely but want to talk about it. These online "relationships" have lead to a lot of new friends that I see at symposia an such throughout the season. Of course, they often feel they know me much more than they do but that's ok. It gives us a starting point to chat and work together on and off the water.

I can't speak for others, but for my part I just write whatever is rolling around in my head that day. Usually it has some connection to sea kayaking, but sometimes it doesn't. Certainly it's not intended to be "brilliant". I'm not sure there is an intention to be much of anything. Just, as they said in the Simpson's, "some stuff than happens".

Of course my comments are subjective. What else could they be?

If self indulgence is ok, then I'm entitled to my subjectivity.

Startled and stirred? Because it mentions masturbation? I should say so! I had to send the butler for my smelling salts!

Dear God, I've only been paddling a year, and it's all been solo. I've only just managed a forward sweep and now there is something else to perfect! I'm going to look on the coaching threads right now...

Yes, the Scots* are well known for their tendency for lengthy soul-searching exposition.

There seems to be some confusion here, if only in my mind, Wouldn't the term "Brit" encompass all the peoples within the British Isles, whether or not they are one nation? Anyway I would like to remain associated in pretty much the same way as now with the Scotch people (apart from that unpleasant person on Mull who shut his bar at 23.00 the other year, but I have to admit he was a southern jessie, as indeed are an awfull lot of folk on the West and alcohol dependant and psychologically weak to boot).

That should do it.

I was going to have a "pop" at the Welsh and Irish too, but decided against it, they're all barking and it's too easy to find out where I live.

O.K. Here's one, BT don't know where Horwich is. What is it like living nowhere? My paddling ninjas were primed and ready to go, only to be let down by technology.

You can take the kettle off now, it's no longer needed.
